Okay, *SPOILER ALERT* This review is for those who might give this movie a pass...and really should not.

We are rushed into the lives of Mike and Lisa, who have come to New York to see Tobi Powell, who is a famous ballet choreographer. The say that they want to interview Tobi, and he is delighted. But we soon feel that there is something wrong with the whole scene, and sure enough, Mike seems to have a strange agenda, and we find out that Tobi might be Mike's dad. Maybe. The rest of the movie is involved with resolving this question.

The acting is amazing, and Sir Patrick Stewart made me wish I could hop onto the train and have brunch with Tobi Powell. This is one well-written character, and I think...
4.5 stars... "I love my life, I regret my life"
"Match" (2014 release; 92 min.) brings the story of Toby (played by Patrick Stewart). As the movie opens, we see Toby leading a ballet troupe at Julliard through a demanding practice. Afterwards, Toby heads back to his apartment somewhere in Manhattan, where he (by choice, we later learn) leads a solitary life. Soon he gets ready to meet up for lunch with Lisa and Mike, a couple from Seattle. Lisa is doing a dissertation on the history of dance, and Toby has stories going back to the 1960s.. After the enjoyable lunch, Toby invites the couple back to his apartment for a further interview. Soon the questions from the couple are becoming more and more personal. Then, about 30 min. into the movie, the Big Twist is revealed. To tell you more would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Couple of comments: this is the movie version of the 2004 Tony-nominated Broadway play by Stephen Belber, who also wrote and directed the...
WE'RE NOT MAKING PIZZA HERE.
Match is a three person play that takes place in the NY apartment of Toby Powell, a bisexual ballet instructor. Toby has traveled the world and is now teaching in NY. He knits and saves his finger nails in a glass jar. Lisa (Carla Gugino) travels from Seattle to interview the quirky Toby on the history of the industry from the 1960's. Along with her is her husband Mike (Matthew Lillard) who records the conversation. During the interview process, things open up, and Mike slowly becomes more hostile and pointed in his questions as we quickly realize there is something else going on.

This is a well acted drama. Carla reminded me of a young Sally Field. The production attempts to become a tear jerker at the end, but I thought it fell a bit short in that regard.

Guide: F-bombs. No sex or nudity.
