Interesting relic of the 60s
You might think that a documentary of Ireland from the 60s involving religion and politics would be about "the Troubles" and be casting blame on England. That is not the case here. Filmmaker Peter Lennon instead presents a case that the Irish government and the Roman Catholic Church is to blame for keeping Ireland in the "dark ages". How much you will enjoy this film will depend on how much you agree with Lennon. There is some fascinating footage here of Irish people going about their daily lives and interviews with clergy, politicians and school children. There is also a number of songs from Irish group "the Dubliners" and a surprise appearance by John Huston. This film was shown at the 1968 Cannes film festival which was halted by Jean Luc-Godard and Francois Truffaut. Lennon acts like this film is the reason the festival was halted but presents no real evidence. In a documentary about the making of "Rocky Road to Dublin" that is included here, Lennon would like us to believe that...
