Review :
"Which story do you prefer?" A film review from a literary perspective
Wow, this has been an exciting fall for literary adaptations! I read Yann Martel's Life of Pi a decade ago and thought it was fantastic storytelling. I cheered when it won the Man Booker Prize. So, I was quite excited to attend an advance screening recently with several members of my book group. I remembered the novel quite well in broad strokes, but not the fine detail. I didn't refresh my memory before watching the film, but was curious enough to reread Life of Pi in its entirety before writing this review. The film is very true to the novel in spirit and tone, but there are small changes, additions (generally positive), and elisions (some noteworthy).

The film opens similarly to the novel. The idea is the same, but the execution is slightly different. Different mediums require different storytelling tools. For instance, I believe most film-goers will readily recognize The Writer (portrayed by actor Rafe Spall, who replaced a distractingly famous Toby Maguire) as...
Beauty and Spirit, Both Beyond Words
This may be the hardest movie review I've ever written, somehow words don't
express it quite right ...

To begin, I saw Life of Pi in 3-D. A week later I went back and saw it again,
because I don't foresee having another chance. I expect the color and detail
will remain gorgeous in 2-D, and I definitely intend to buy the disc.

However the 3-D in this movie is spectacular. The tiger, Richard Parker, is
at the top of the list, but in fact the entire movie benefits tremendously
from 3-D. If you liked Avatar, you probably liked the marvelous animals.
And I'm sure in some scenes, Richard Parker is CGI'd to some extent. But
Life of Pi has a real earthly animal to work with, and you can argue there
is no animal on earth more beautiful or fierce than a tiger. That's part
of the genius of this movie, and I'm sure one reason James Cameron liked
it so much.

That brings me to another point about this movie, its...
A must-see masterpiece of the beauty of being alive
Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" is a masterpiece with some of the most beautiful and unforgettable images ever displayed on film. Not only did it give me an experience of the wonder in being alive while moving me to tears, but its story also encompassed a human life from childhood to mature age while dealing with pain and guilt that are part of the human experience.

Ang Lee isn't thought of as an Asian auteur in the class of Wong Kar-wai, Zhang Yimou or Lee Chang-dong. He's actually more of a commercial director than a personal artist, but what he does in transferring the "Life of Pi" from novel to screen is miraculous. Perhaps no director has ever captured the beauty and fear of the power of life, and when you look deep into the eyes of the tiger "Richard Parker", you see what Marlowe saw in Kurtz's eyes in Conrad's "The Heart of Darkness": a power so vast it dwarfs you with an awareness of your mortality, showing you your insignificance beside the powers of all life. What Ang...

Review :
Contains 51 Minutes of "Wacky Delly" Live from 2012
Joe Murray wasn't expecting a complete series to come out in one package - and I don't think Shout Factory or Nickelodeon planned it. What Joe said on his blog was that the single seasons sold so well that Shout and Nickelodeon decided to produce a complete series DVD. It looks like all of the discs are the same as the previous releases. The inside cover has new original Joe Murray artwork that has a collage of multiple characters. Visit Shout Factory for an image of that.

One downside is there is no episode list within this set and the DVD extras are sprinkled through the set (they are found on the same DVD as the previous individual season releases). Also, the episodes are still censored (like the previous released Seasons).

Season 1 contains no extras
Season 2 has the original Pilot "Trash-O-Madness" with the original YELLOW version of Rocko and "Behind the Characters" with Joe Murray (info about the characters while Joe shows you how to draw them -...
CENSORED!!
a warning to all fans out there, these are NOT the rml you grew up watching. certain scenes have been taken out by nickelodeon to make it more p.c and kid-friendly despite the fact that the vast majority of its fanbase are well past adulthood by now. i'm disgusted that people are paying good money for a watered-down version of an otherwise magnificent show. do yourself a favor and find a torrent of the original episodes. this is one of many reasons why piracy is necessary to keep hollywood in check. what an absolute disgrace.

All 52 episodes are present in order by air date spread across 8 discs, including the "Leap Frogs" episode where Bev Bighead tries to seduce Rocko. This episode was eventually taken off air during the shows original run because of it's adult theme.

Review :
Bursting with life, color, and beauty!
I didn't watch this expecting much. I'm not a child, and I'm not Mexican, and the trailers didn't sell me all the way. But I gave it a try, and by the time The Book of Life had ended, I was astounded. The Book of Life explodes with...life! There's not a single dull frame in the movie. It's a carnival of color, beauty, music, and life! Every character is unique, every landscape unforgettably intricate. Its fresh and dazzling, and bursting with heart. The Book of Life is one of the best kid's movies of the year.

The film tells the story of Manolo, a soulful and poetic young man hopelessly in love with the beautiful Maria. The only problem is that the dashing, preening Joaquin is in love with her too. To add to this, the gods La Muerte (made of sugar candy) and Xibalba (made of tar) are wagering on who gets the girl (and Maria will have none of it!). From there begins a story that will take our heroes to the Land of the Remembered, the Land of the Forgotten, and everything in...

An amazing movie, my children loved it so much we ended up watching it a second time at the movie theater. For some odd reason I don't believe this was marketed right, the movie has such a beautiful cast and beautiful story. The colors and the characters were so perfectly done. When Manolo arrives into the land of the dead with all other sugar skulls, gosh it feels so inviting and soooo beyond beautiful that it submerges you into the world of color, life and the festivities. By far one of the best mbira I've seen this year. The humor, the love and the acceptance that giveness is needed in order to be able to love.

Breath-takingly Gorgeous with a Dash of Mexican Flavor
We can all appreciate the brilliant and gorgeous animated films of Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks, but let's be honest that they all kind of look and feel the same. They're either selling toys or retelling old fairy tales, and while that doesn't diminish how good they are the animated field has been in desperate need of a kick in the pants for a long time. Actually, what it needed was a dash of spice, or in the case of the visually breath-taking The Book of Life, a dash of Mexican flavor.

Directed with obvious passion by Jorge Gutierrez, The Book of Life is a smorgasbord for the eyes, bursting with colors and energy like an overstuffed piñata. It's good to see a film that doesn't try to diminish its Latin heritage, but embraces it in a universal story of love and friendship based on the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos, the "Day of the Dead". The story begins simply enough, both narratively and visually, with a museum tour guide (Christina Applegate)...

Review :
Bugs screaming for attention
This is a fable about our need to believe in ourselves.

The story is probably one of the best features in the exquisite animated film, A Bug's Life. The narrative about the life of a working ant called Flick and his attempt to save his colony from the eternal domination of the grasshoppers -through recruiting a group of insects that turn out to be circus actors- is completely charming, innovative and unique. The plot is a pleasant surprise for the audience: just when one thinks everything is revealed, a new twist comes out to keep us guessing again what will happen.

The movie allows itself to have a series of incredible characters that develop while the story takes its place. Flick goes from naive and optimistic to self-confident and serious. The circus members are one of the most eclectic groups of lovable losers ever to illuminate the screen. They add color to the plot and the rest of the cast, with their adventures, mischief, eccentricities and craziness...
Wonderful!
A BUG'S LIFE is truly a movie that the entire family can enjoy. It is adorable, funny, and it has a message that everybody can relate to.
The DVD is amazing, amazing, amazing! The transfer (the first ever completely digital transfer), is simply unbelievable. It is like you can reach into the screen and touch the characters. The cinemascope animation is truly stunning, and the transfer expresses it beautifully. The sound is wonderful. You feel like you're in the bugs' world.
This DVD has the most amazing set of extras I have ever seen. It takes you through the entire process of making A BUG'S LIFE...I've gone through "preproduction" and the first half of "production" and it took me an hour and a half...I still have three sections left! What is more amazing is that every extra is interesting! Truly an outstanding, sure to be groundbreaking disc. Disney, why can't all of your DVDs be like this!
A MUST HAVE!

The best DVD I've ever owned
This is probably not going to surprise anyone-- This is simply an excellent DVD, in every scale. The first disc contains the movie itself, which is transferred from its original, digital source. The picture quality is unbelievable. Not one spot comes up during the movie, not one scratch appears-- because this wasn't transferred from film. This is the way A Bug's Life should be watched. The colors are amazing, bright and contrast eachother perfectly. The sound is also unbelievable-- this movie challanged my 1.5 surround system perfectly. Unlike some other movies I've seen, where the two rear speakers are only used about twice in the movie, A Bug's Life uses them almost constantly-- You can hear the crickets and cicadas all around you in many of the scenes, Hopper's gang are flying at you from behind; Even with a simple scene like the "Royal Huddle" the ant's footsteps are coming from around you. The first disc contains a Cinemascope widescreen version and a...
