At the edge of an expansive barren valley, all that remains of The Wallace Farm for Wayward Youth is a few hollowed-out husks of buildings. Seventeen- year-old Kendal (Haley Lu Richardson) can barely recall when the Oregon valley was still lush. It s been a decade since the last rainfall, and society at large has dried up and blown away. Kendal and the few others that remain barely scrape by while dreaming of escape. When a greedy water baron lays claim to what little of the precious resource remains underground, Kendal must decide whether to run and hide or bravely fight for the few cherished people and things she has left. Co-starring Booboo Stewart (The Twilight Saga), Max Charles (The Amazing Spider-Man, Mr. Peabody & Sherman) and genre veteran Barbara Crampton (You re Next, Re-Animator), THE LAST SURVIVORS is a suspenseful look at a futuristic world where only the most resourceful survive.

Wasn't bad, however we felt like the dialouge was a bit stiff as well as breif. The problem wasn't the acting it seemed to us that the general development of any backround for the story or characters/ character development really destroyed any deeper feeling we might have felt when some parts took place, a few characters the audience was clearly meant to care about we nearly forgot about more than a few times. Also we noticed that there were a few times that the movie could have ended by her just steping out and shooting the antagonist and his goons, (SPOILERS) skills she showed off by ramboing through several badies without taking a scratch at the end, this could have been time better used to develop characters or uncover a backstory.... or something rather than just saying "the bad guy is bad". This aside we all agree we liked it, but thats not to say we would prefer this to Beasts Of The Southern Wild.

Good Post Apocalyptic Film; Nothing More, Nothing Less
This film starts out slow, but then begins to get more intriguing and exciting. Give it a chance. However, the story line is relatively thin, and so this is by no means a great movie: of the post-apocalyptic sort, or by any classification. Nonetheless, it has respectable characterizations, with very good actors, and an interesting, if a bit pale, premise. (...) Do not be fooled by the good reviews, but I would say a decent late night.

Patrick Stewart gives a captivating performance in this witty, emotionally gripping adaptation of director Stephen Belber s own Tony Award-nominated play. Stewart stars as Tobi, an eccentric, pot-smoking Manhattan ballet instructor whose quiet life is interrupted by the arrival of a young couple (Carla Gugino & Matthew Lillard) from Seattle, presumably there to interview him about his colorful life as a dancer in the 1960s. As Tobi spins salacious tales from his former career, an ulterior motive for the couple s visit emerges, forcing the trio to confront a secret that may connect them all. Driven by Stewart s tour-de-force performance, MATCH moves masterfully between razor-sharp comic banter and heartrending poignancy.

Okay, *SPOILER ALERT* This review is for those who might give this movie a pass...and really should not.

We are rushed into the lives of Mike and Lisa, who have come to New York to see Tobi Powell, who is a famous ballet choreographer. The say that they want to interview Tobi, and he is delighted. But we soon feel that there is something wrong with the whole scene, and sure enough, Mike seems to have a strange agenda, and we find out that Tobi might be Mike's dad. Maybe. The rest of the movie is involved with resolving this question.

The acting is amazing, and Sir Patrick Stewart made me wish I could hop onto the train and have brunch with Tobi Powell. This is one well-written character, and I think...
4.5 stars... "I love my life, I regret my life"
"Match" (2014 release; 92 min.) brings the story of Toby (played by Patrick Stewart). As the movie opens, we see Toby leading a ballet troupe at Julliard through a demanding practice. Afterwards, Toby heads back to his apartment somewhere in Manhattan, where he (by choice, we later learn) leads a solitary life. Soon he gets ready to meet up for lunch with Lisa and Mike, a couple from Seattle. Lisa is doing a dissertation on the history of dance, and Toby has stories going back to the 1960s.. After the enjoyable lunch, Toby invites the couple back to his apartment for a further interview. Soon the questions from the couple are becoming more and more personal. Then, about 30 min. into the movie, the Big Twist is revealed. To tell you more would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Couple of comments: this is the movie version of the 2004 Tony-nominated Broadway play by Stephen Belber, who also wrote and directed the...
WE'RE NOT MAKING PIZZA HERE.
Match is a three person play that takes place in the NY apartment of Toby Powell, a bisexual ballet instructor. Toby has traveled the world and is now teaching in NY. He knits and saves his finger nails in a glass jar. Lisa (Carla Gugino) travels from Seattle to interview the quirky Toby on the history of the industry from the 1960's. Along with her is her husband Mike (Matthew Lillard) who records the conversation. During the interview process, things open up, and Mike slowly becomes more hostile and pointed in his questions as we quickly realize there is something else going on.

This is a well acted drama. Carla reminded me of a young Sally Field. The production attempts to become a tear jerker at the end, but I thought it fell a bit short in that regard.

Guide: F-bombs. No sex or nudity.

Review :
good show!
I must say that it is great to now own the ITV restorations on blu ray. I purchased the previous DVD set for about the same price as this set. It, too, featured the restored transfers, albeit in SD.

That being said, these are the exact same transfers, just presented in the high definition they were originally mastered in. As other posters have mentioned, these same transfers have been issued on BD already in other countries.

ADVENTURES and RETURN are each presented over 3 platters, with CASEBOOK, MEMOIRS, and FEATURE FILM COLLECTION over 2 platters each. All of the bonus content is exactly the same as on the DVD set, right down to the booklet authored by Richard Valley.

The only negative I can mention about the set (and granted, a minor quibble) refers to the cheapness of the packaging. Instead of the nice sturdy box used for the DVD set, MPI have opted for a faux texture resembling that box. The problem is, it's a cheap thin cardboard sleeve...
Quality Holmes with both excellent video and audio; a treasure!
I see that there are quite a few lesser reviews of this Blu-ray set but I personally think the sound and image quality are wonderful for these episodes being as old as they are (at least in the two episodes I have watched so far.) I have noticed quite a bit of detail that I never noted in my old DVDs which makes my appreciate how well done this series in terms of authenticity and dedication to the appearance of 19th century Victorian London. In short, the episodes I viewed looked great. And of course, Mr. Brett's portrayal of Holmes will always be the gold standard for me and I even use his image in picturing Holmes when reading Conan Doyle's original canon or a pastiche. To summarize, I can not recommend this set enough.

Fantastic
This series is a flat out masterpiece. The Blu-ray edition is mind blowing. Yes, the resolution and clarity are so great that occasionally you are aware of the make-up on some of the actors. Especially Brett, in the later episodes. However, you are also aware of how beautifully interiors are lit. How the sunshine fills a room. You hear and see a rain storm outside his window, seemingly for the first time. There are nuances in exterior shots that reach out and grab you. In short, you are transported to the time and place like never before. The acting by everyone involved is mesmerizing. What a triumph!

Review :
London's Only "Consulting Detective."
In his foreword to Bantam's "Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories," Loren Estleman called the relationship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson literature's warmest, most symbiotic and most timeless: rightfully so. Not surprisingly, film history is littered with adaptations of Conan Doyle's tales and Holmes pastiches (using the protagonists but otherwise independent storylines). Yet - and I'm saying this with particular apologies to the fans of the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce canon - none of these prior incarnations can hold a candle to the ITV/Granada TV series produced between 1984 and 1994, starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes and first David Burke, then, beginning with the second ("Return of Sherlock Holmes") cycle and in near-seamless transition, Edward Hardwicke as a refreshingly sturdy, pragmatic, unbumbling Dr. Watson.

Jeremy Brett was the only actor who ever managed to perfectly portray Holmes's imperiousness, bitingly ironic sense of humor and apparently...
They should have replaced the "as" with "is"
To a great number of Sherlockians--or Holmesians, if you prefer--Jeremy Brett's performance as the world's first consulting detective was the definitive portrayal. And while this series has its flaws and deviations from the original text, it is still arguably the best filmic representation available.

I have seen the original MPI releases, as well as a Japanese/Chinese collection, and without question, this new set features the best picture and sound quality. (Perhaps the PAL version released a couple years earlier in the UK is slightly superior, but I doubt anyone could really see the difference.) The uniform menu screens and the sharp design of the packaging are also an improvement upon previous releases.

My complaints are few and rather inconsequential, but they are as follows:
1) There are no additional special features, but in fact *fewer* special features than the original DVD releases.
2) The pictures on the faces of the DVDs were chosen...
Jeremy Brett was the Definitive Sherlock Holmes
This review has been updated on Sept. 18. I received my Sherlock Holmes set from MPI today and as I hoped, it looks and sounds FANTASTIC! I already have watched a lot from the set. You won't be disappointed! I have been sending e-mails for a few years now to MPI Home Video, asking that they remaster this series and make it available on DVD. I am so glad they finally have. Two episodes in their original release of "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," notably "The Dancing Men" and "The Naval Treaty," had audio problems in some of the soundtrack music. They have remastered this series from the original Granada tapes in England. This resulted in an awesome picture and sound quality. Thank you MPI! What more can be said about Jeremy Brett? Many people, including myself, consider him to be the definitive Sherlock Holmes. His manner, gestures and overall portrayal shows us clearly that he read Conan Doyle and became very well acquainted with his alter ego. The stories are great and this...

DO NOT GET IT GIFT WRAPPED!
I am so beyond thrilled with this collection, but furious at how Amazon shipped it. I too watched the series in the 60's-70's. Unlike those who rushed home from school to watch, I rushed from elementary school to the neighboring nursery/pre-school I previously attended to watch (the Catholic nuns who ran the school watched it!). I had to wait there for my parents to pick me up after work (was 6 when the series began). They still remember if they arrived before 4:30, they would HAVE TO sit in the car to wait for DS to be over.

Anyway, my mother pre-ordered the collection for me, it arrived on April 11. Unfortunately she tried to make it even more special by having it "gift wrapped". What a joke! Amazon removed the coffin from its plastic bag, placed it in an UGLY blue canvas tote bag (THAT was the gift wrap), discarded all of the perfect original packaging. Placed the canvas bag in a box, padded only by inflated cellophane baggies. When it arrived, the baggies were popped,...
Wanting the Dark Shadows Collection REAL bad!
I have seen the entire series many times and starting when it was first on TV many years ago. To say that I love this TV series would be a major understatement. There is just something about it that makes me want to see it again and again. Maybe because it mentally transports me back to a time when I was a kid at home after school, a time before my parents were deceased, a time when all seemed right in the world and the scariest thing about life was Barnabas and Angelique in Dark Shadows.

With its alluring tales of Gothic mystery and supernatural intrigue, Dark Shadows became one of the most popular daytime series of all time. Since first airing on ABC-TV from 1966 to 1971, Dark Shadows has earned the reputation of being one of the most unusual and enduring programs in television history. The character of Barnabas Collins, a guilt-ridden, 175-year-old vampire, brought the show tremendous success.

"O.K....Now We're Talking!!!!"
The following review is dedicated to my favorite actor of all-time, Jonathan Frid who passed away peacefully in his native Canada on April 14, 2012. We will miss you Mr. Frid, but thankfully we have your years of work on DVD for posterity to remember you by. God bless you "Barnabas".

With the release film version of the 1960's cult classic daytime soap opera "Dark Shadows" starring Johnny Depp MPI Home Video has released "Dark Shadows-The Complete DVD Collection"! This has made all of us "Dark Shadows" fans extremely happy, especially those of us that haven't yet purchased any DVD sets of the series.
