I must admit when I heard they were making a movie of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, I had very low expectations for a film about a bunch of D-listers from the Marvel Universe; ones so far down that many fans had to think for moment to remember where this group fit in the Marvel pantheon of heroes. Now, after seeing the movie, I am more than glad to say that I was wrong, for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY turns out to be everything you'd want in a summer blockbuster and more.

While the plot of GUARDIANS is a comic book staple-ragtag group of misfits must band together to keep an all powerful McGuffian (an orb containing an Infinity jewel) from falling into the hands of a super villain-it is the cast and the characters, more than anything, that make GUARDIANS not just another big screen comic book epic. i went to see guardians of the galaxy last night and wow! i totally loved it. an entertaining science fiction opus, guardians of the galaxy succeeds because the characters are so damn likeable, and they propel the awesome visual effects. chris pratt's starlord is a delight, and he works perfectly with zoe zaldana's gamora, who is much more serious, but looking for a pal. dave baitista is wonderful as the literal-minded wrecking crew that is drax the destroyer, and rocket raccoon and groot are two of the best cgi-realized characters that i have ever seen on film, a perfect blend of bradley cooper and vin diesel's voices and computer realization. the five of these folks work beautifully together, and make every frame of this movie a treat. and this being a james gunn movie, we of course get michael rooker doing his thing, as well as little brother sean doing his. and i believe stan lee gets his finest cameo in a marvel film. other interesting cats show up, like rob zombie, nathan...
