Hongi (James Rolleston) - a Maori chieftain's teenage son - must avenge his father's murder in order to bring peace and honor to the souls of his loved ones after his tribe is slaughtered through an act of treachery. Vastly outnumbered by a band of villains, led by Wirepa (Te Kohe Tuhaka), Hongi's only hope is to pass through the feared and forbidden Dead Lands and forge an uneasy alliance with the mysterious "Warrior" (Lawrence Makoare), a ruthless fighter who has ruled the area for years.

Review :
A Gem from New Zealand
I don't regret the time I spent watching this gem from New Zealand. Not a moment was wasted. The Dead Lands is a well-crafted story of warring Maori tribes and of one young man in particular who survives a massacre. His entire family was wiped out. Driven by the need for revenge, he becomes a warrior as brutal in battle as the enemy he despises. Inevitably, though, he runs up against the ugly truth about violence and takes a surprising action, a leap of faith. It's not something I could have experienced in a typical Hollywood film.

its a damn good movie. Villians
Go into this expecting:
1. the natives to not know English, hence subtitles
2. It to be about times before the cell phone
3. people killed people then, a lot, and sometimes ate them. that's what they did, get over it.
4. Its spiritual, big surprise, back then everything was spiritual. Omens, talismans, witches, etc....
5. its a damn good movie. Villians, Hero's, Anti-Hero's/Anti-villians... hard to see who is good and who is bad till the very end, if you pay attentionto the movie, the main character has some trouble knowing which way to lean, great job!

A Powerful Movie!
I watched this at the Hawaii International Film Festival and plan on getting it as soon as available. A wonderful piece of cinema - delving deeply into Maori culture. What struck me most was the similarities between Samurai and Maori honor codes - the reverence for the ancestors and the need for remembrance. The film is very gory so I would not recommend it for the very young or weak of stomach - but the authenticity of the costumes and the wonderful performances of the actors make it a powerful experience. Bravo to all involved in this movie!

Bonus materials
If you're buying this collection, it is obvious you're a fan of the Pegg/Frost/Wright movies. This review clarifies the bonus materials found in the Blu-Ray collection of the three movies in the "Cornetto Trilogy."

The product description is a little vague on the bonus materials that go with this release. Sometimes disk collections skimp on the bonus materials that are found in the normal release. Fortunately, this is not the case with this collection. The disks are loaded with commentaries, out takes, deleted scenes, featurettes, etc., etc., etc.

The back of the box indicates: "Over six hours of apocalyptic bonus features! Including 9 feature commentaries, 11 featurettes, out-takes, deleted scenes and much, much more."

By the way, if you finish these and want more of the same vein, you really must check out "Spaced." It was a 14-epidode TV series, and an absolute must for geeks that love Pegg/Frost/Wright creations.

A SLICE OF FRIED GOLD
Chances are you don’t really need to read reviews on this. If you’re looking at this item, you probably want to buy it. But maybe you’re wondering:

Is it three boxes with a wrap to hold them, or one box with three discs?

I can answer that: It’s one box. It has one of those inserts that holds a disc on both sides, plus one on the back part of the inside of the case. One box, three discs, and a cardboard wrapper because who like trees, anyways?

The ultimate three flavors Cornetto Trilogy!!
Three slices of fried gold are what I call the movies in this collection. I can't really decide which I like the best because each definitely has its own special "flavor". Despite sharing hilarious comedy gags and themes of maturity & friendship.

Shaun of the Dead - is a love letter to George Romero Zombie films & the movie that serves to introduce the talented team of: Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost to mainstream audiences.

Hot Fuzz - is a hilarious nod to buddy cop films & has a lot of great over the top action.

The World's End - wraps up "The Trilogy" and is another great nod to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Also serving to prove that you really can't go home again.

This Blu-ray collection is also packed with extras for each film giving the fan plenty of behind the scenes Cornetto comedy.

Billy finally comes to life on Blu-Ray!!
Finally this very under appreciated and underrated horror film is getting a U.S. Blu-Ray release this summer. Such a great horror film from horror genius James Wan and one his leasted talked about films. Excited for August 11th.

Bored silent, you dummy.
This has to be one of the least entertaining horror films I have ever seen. The idea was great but the execution was poor. Just another generic plot line with anticipated scares and a far too darkly lit ambiance for its own good. It's painful to see a great idea turn into just another silly b-movie.

Great Film!
Finally great to have this film on Blu Ray. A very unique, creepy film. If you are a horror fan, you can not go wrong here. Unlike most scary movies it is something that hasn't been done ten thousand times before.

When the world is ravaged by a zombie apocalypse, police officer Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and a small group of others struggle to stay alive as 'the dead' stalk them at every turn. Can Rick and the others hold onto their humanity as they fight to live in this terrifying new world? And, amidst dire conditions and personal rivalries, will they ultimately survive one another?

Based on Robert Kirkman's hugely successful and popular comic book series, AMC's original series "The Walking Dead" is an epic, edge-of-your-seat drama where personal struggles are magnified against a backdrop of moment-to-moment crisis. A survivalist story at its core, the series explores how the living are changed by the overwhelming realization that those who survive can be far more dangerous than the mindless walkers roaming the earth. They themselves have become the walking dead.

Review :
Surprised by how much I liked this.
I'm not much for zombie shows or movies of any kind. It's the human aspect of the show that drew me in. What they do, how they survive, the relationships that are made when the basic tenents of society as we know it have been broken down. I'd watch something like that even if there were no zombies. However, the zombies aspect of this show adds a wonderful scary element of danger that can't help but make one wonder what they themselves would do in such a situation. This is a drama. It's people plucked out of every day life and dropped into a new and terrifying world that looks exactly the same. It's about how they survive. It's not meant to be about zombies macking on people for an hour. Though the fact that that could happen does make it interesting. The zombies themselves are disgustingly well done and gross and the gore is quite graphic and realistic. When a zombie bites into someone's neck and rips the flesh free and blood spurts and sprays...it looks real. There is a...
Seen A Lot Of Zombie Crap But This...
Oh man, this show has it all. Have you ever watched a scary show or movie & been screaming at the characters, "what in the hell are you doing man! Don't go off in the dark alone! Don't leave your gun! Moron!!!" Well, this is one of the very first shows where I see people making decisions similar or identical to the ones I would make in the event of a zombie apocolypse. Sounds corny but it is a great show! I think probably my favorite show I've seen in years!

Get Down With the Sickness
I read the first 12 issues of Robert Kirkman's epic graphic novel The Walking Dead back in 2006. Late fans to the story can now pick up the first 48 issues of the graphic novel in a convenient single work titled The Walking Dead: Compendium One. As of today, Kirkman has published almost 100 issues in the series (that I now anxiously check my mailbox for every month).

What's all that mean? It means that there are years and years of TV seasons ahead if AMC stays the course of excellence that it has so far done in the first two seasons. Why? Because as far as the graphic novel issue-by-issue storyline parallel to the TV series goes, I would guesstimate that the TV series is MAYBE through only about the first dozen issues.

Has the TV series taken some liberties and made changes to the story(ies) presented in the graphic novel? Sure. But are those liberties just as well told as Kirkman originally...

After waking from a coma in an abandoned hospital, police officer Rick Grimes finds the world he knew gone - ravaged by a zombie epidemic of apocalyptic proportions. Nearby, on the outskirts of Atlanta, a small encampment struggles to survive as 'the dead' stalk them at every turn. Can Rick and the others hold onto their humanity as they fight to live in this terrifying new world? And, amidst dire conditions and personal rivalries, will they ultimately survive one another? AMC’s The Walking Dead is an epic, survival adventure series from the director of The Shawshank Redemption and the producer of The Terminator and Aliens. Arguably the biggest hit of the 2010 television season, the apocalypse drama The Walking Dead pulls the zombie subgenre out of its overexposed doldrums and finds, ironically enough, the humanity and emotion beneath its rotting shell. Produced by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Gale Anne Hurd (Aliens) and based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead follows a band of Atlanta-based survivors of a viral outbreak that has caused the dead to rise up and consume the living. The group's nominal leader is a sheriff's deputy (Andrew Lincoln) who wakes from a gunshot-induced coma to find the world in disarray and his wife (Sarah Wayne Callies, Prison Break) and son missing. His search for his family and the survivors' attempts to make sense of their lives in the wake of the outbreak is handled with intelligence and sensitivity, which helps to elevate the show beyond the grindhouse take on zombies, which favors spilled guts over character development. That's not to say that the blood doesn't flow plentifully here: the special effects are on par with zombie-movie mayhem, but again, they aren't the show's raison d'être. Solid performances, including Jon Bernthal as Lincoln's partner, Jeffrey DeMunn as the group's leading rationalist, and Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus as a pair of trouble-making rednecks, and gripping suspense make each of the first season's six episodes compelling from start to finish for both horror fans and those who dislike the genre as a whole.

The two-disc set of Walking Dead's first season includes all six episodes, as well as a number of making-of extras, including the show's conception and production, a talk with Robert Kirkman (he's a fan), a look at the makeup by KNB Studios, and the show's panel at the 2010 ComicCon. All of the principal players on both sides of the camera are given adequate screen time to discuss their vision for the show, its influences (George Romero, naturally), and the challenges of depicting the end of civilization on a budget. --Paul Gaita

A Zombie Epic Takes a Double Dip--Great For Newbies, But Probably An Essential Upgrade Only For Fervent Fans
NOTE: Some are claiming that the 3-disc edition is edited. IT IS ABSOLUTELY NOT EDITED. There are no missing scenes. There is an international version available that is somewhat less than complete (edited for gore), so beware of third party sellers. It appears that some U.S. copies may have a playback quirk, though (mine doesn't). On the episode "Guts," if you Play All you might see some material edited. If you select the individual episode from the menu (instead of Play All), there is no issue. Otherwise, the official U.S. release is absolutely fine.

So now that all The Walking Dead TV fans have purchased Season One, here comes the inevitable double dip for the 3-Disc Special edition. I always find this a dubious way to reward fans, by making them regret buying your initial product. It does, however, seem to be a commercial reality that continues to disappoint and exploit consumers. Whether or not you will indulge in the new version will depend on how appealing...
Why is 3-Disc Special Edition edited ???
First off let me say I love the series. I like the writing, directing, and the in your face style of filming.
I purchased the "The Complete First Season 3-Disc Special Edition, based on the reviews here.
While watching my new purchase I was EXTREMELY DISAPOINTED while watching Ep.# 2 "Guts" in the scene where they run into the alley to grab the walker to dismember and use his guts and body parts for camouflage, that entire sequence is edited out of this supposedly complete special edition.
It shows them grabbing the walker and bringing him into the building and closing the door and the next thing you see is them walking out the door covered in the guts and parts.
The whole 3-min+ scene is gone where they talk about who he(the walker) was before and starting to chop him into pieces.
One of the most graphic scenes in the series so far and its not on the complete special edition discs!!!

I am equally dumbfounded that previeous reviewers failed to...
A Television Snob Confesses - Five Stars
++++ NO SPOILERS ++++

I love horror and outre film and television, but, no pun intended, I thought until "The Walking Dead" that the zombie genre was a played out mining town. Starting far back with Bela Lugosi's fantastic "White Zombie" all the way up through the masterpiece "Night of the Living Dead" and ending in satire with the hilarious "Army of Darkness" and "Shaun of the Dead," I thought myself to be on safe ground in this harshly critical assessment. Sometimes, it's a pleasure to be flat wrong.

I watched all six episodes of this, and cannot wait for the next season. It's an ensemble acting piece, so focus never lingers too long on any one particular character. This is a brilliant opening gambit for television since the viewer can, in a way, vicariously share the dread of "just getting to know someone" and then have them ripped away, either by the evil of men, mischance, or zombie attack. Some think that the acting is contrived. I do not. All of...
