This review is for the "Batman Anthology" set, where each movie is packaged in a new, 2-disc special edition. There is also an older, "Batman Legacy" set with the bare-bones editions, and Amazon seems to be grouping the two reviews together.

It's about time that Warner Home Video has finally given these superhero films the two disc, special-edition treatment they deserve. Each film comes with restored/enhanced video and audio, and all the special features one expects from a current dvd release these days; we get commentaries, archival music videos and trailers, making-of featurettes, interviews, retrospectives, and deleted scenes. The last bit will be of special interest to some fans, especially because the Batman Forever DVD finally includes those missing sequences we saw in the storybooks and trading cards (though they appear here in rough form). Also of interest to fans of the animated series is the abandoned "Robin sequence" from the original movie, where they got Kevin...
Good value, but the quality is terrible.

I'll admit that the price is cheap. Having all four films for less than $10 is great, but upon watching the first disc, I find that the quality of the transfer is absolutely terrible. Lots and lots of pixelation artifacts, especially when there's black on the screen, and let's face it, BATMAN was not a brightly lit film. The quality is barely, BAREly above VHS. I feel like they hooked a VCR up to a DVD recorder and had at it. I'm not even talking about grain (which I would expect from an older film transfer), but rather poor resolution. There are no solid diagonal lines, everything is blocky. The video looks like an SVCD that was poorly upconverted to DVD.

It's good value, if you're just looking for an affordable way to complete your collection, but if you're used to DVD-quality video, you will be disappointed...

As far as BATMAN and BATMAN RETURNS, all the extras from the two-disc Special Editions are here. Unfortunately, Warner couldn't care less about the quality of the transfers. Sure you can see more detail in these BD releases, but there's been no restoration. Matte lines are starting to show, and in the case of BATMAN, very clear sprocket hole wear in the master print results in the main title jumping considerably. Paired with Danny Elfman's soaring crescendo when the title appears, the crisp gold title jittering about is pretty disappointing.

I only bought this for the first two (Tim Burton) films, and at Costco the price was less than the two as individual releases. So no great loss, but still...

There have been a number of reviews and they cover ever aspect of these excellent movies so I will try not to repeat what has been covered multiple times. There is one subject that I did not notice and which is a primary issue with me - Subtitles.
My hearing has lost its ability to clearly understand some of the higher frequencies such as some voices of females and on occasion a high pitched male. Without subtitles I cannot thoroughly enjoy a movie since I can understand only parts of the dialog. This Bond series does provide subtitles in English. When I played the first disc, Dr No, I thought that only Spanish was available but that is not the case. If you want subtitles in English and did not find them here is what I did:

1. Wait for the opening comments to play and get to the page that has "Initiate Mission" highlighted.

2. Go up past "Special Features" and click on "Language Description".

A Departure for Charles Lamont

Charles Lamont as a director is more well known for his classic comedies and this film is a rare departure for him from his usual Shirley Temple fare. In this effort he tries to create a suspensful murder mystery and succeeds very well. He does so using almost no stars. He's helped along by a very strong script that kept be guessing to the end and the fact that he clearly had more money to work with than most guys of the film noir era. A top notch job all around.

Fast-moving who-dun-it features ex-beauty queen
THE DARK HOUR is a mystery programmer directed by Charles Lamont (he also worked with Abbott & Costello, and did Ma & Pa Kettle and Francis the Talking Mule films).

The story follows a classic format: two detectives investigating the murder of an elderly millionaire are presented with a number of suspects, all of whom have motives for homicide. The movie also diverts from the familiar and expected: the two detectives, one old, one young, work independent of each other and cautiously compare notes. After a second killing occurs, the men decide to join forces to solve the case.

ALPHA VIDEO is a provider of vintage programming that's often unavailable elsewhere. Their prices are fair, but so is transfer quality of some of their offerings. None have undergone restoration, yet this product's rareness and an honest price make it a worthwhile purchase.

taut, emotional drama with lots of action and brilliant acting, too
The Love Light is an excellent Mary Pickford vehicle that packs incredible amounts of action and adventure into the total running time of 89 minutes. This taut drama focuses on the life and times of Angela Carlotti (Mary Pickford) just before the First World War, during the war and thereafter. The acting is rather good although there are a few times when some of their "faces" are exaggerated; and the plot held my attention every step of the way. The music that goes along with the film could have been better but it doesn't truly lessen the value of the film.

When the action begins, Angela Carlotti is seen with her brothers Mario (Eddie Phillips) and Antonio (Jean De Briac). They tease the amorous Giovanni (Raymond Bloomer) who pines away for Angela even though she does not return his love. Unfortunately, war breaks out and Angela's two brothers go to serve much to Angela's chagrin.

At about the same time, Angela works at the local fishing village lighthouse and...
A Fine Pickford Performance
The Love Light is a good Mary Pickford film with an interesting story. It is set in Italy during the First World War. Pickford plays Angela and shows, with this role, that her acting was not at all limited in scope. The standard image of `Little Mary' is of someone who always played cute girls, as if she was some sort of silent Shirley Temple. It's a wonderful love story about a woman who falls in love with a stray (AWOL) soldier who she thinks is American. But he turns out to be German. Not a comedy. Nice print, nicely restored. The musical accompaniment starts out quite nice and eventually nearly drove me crazy. But you can always turn it off. The film is worth it.....

The Love Light is an excellent Mary Pickford vehicle that packs incredible amounts of action and adventure into the total running time of 89 minutes. This taut drama focuses on the life and times of Angela Carlotti (Mary Pickford) just before the First World War, during the war and thereafter. The acting is rather good although there are a few times when some of their "faces" are exaggerated; and the plot held my attention every step of the way. The music that goes along with the film could have been better but it doesn't truly lessen the value of the film.

When the action begins, Angela Carlotti is seen with her brothers Mario (Eddie Phillips) and Antonio (Jean De Briac). They tease the amorous Giovanni (Raymond Bloomer) who pines away for Angela even though she does not return his love. Unfortunately, war breaks out and Angela's two brothers go to serve much to Angela's chagrin.

Bad and poor quality

This is not just a bad movie (especially since it spent the first 20+ minutes with some narration and videos of the whole "war is bad" stuff of the 70's), but the actual DVD is the worst "quality" (and I use that term loosely here) I have ever seen. Grainy and blurry, like watching a 30 year old, deteriorating VHS copy. Even going so far as to have a gap in the movie at around 32 minutes in!
Over all, this is another bad movie from a terrible time period for sci-fi (pre-Star Wars). Giving this movie a 1 star is being way too kind - it deserves no stars.

Mow the lawn instead

Mow the lawn, take the dog for a walk, pick the lint out from between your toes...ANYTHING EXCEPT WATCH THIS MOVIES. It's absurdly stupid...Do not waste your time on this.

Not worth the time

I never finished watching the video so I will not comment on the actors and their roles. However, the movie moved very slowly so as to not hold my interest. The quality of the video was extremely poor to the point that even if the movie had kept my interest I wouldn't have stayed with it.

A difficult and preachy film that falls into that slender catagory of 1950's sci-fi/horror set outside the United States and in Mexico - South of the Border chillers (KRONOS is another) - where the labor was cheap, the deserts always dry and the talent always in a sweat. The story behind MESA is simple enough - a mad doctor has crossed the power of a spider with the sexual wiles of the female form - creating a labor force of immortal, super strong and mute women who do his every bidding, biting and killing for... reasons unknown. Like all mad scientists he simply does what he does because he can... no reason needed. While MESA comes up short in many ways (is it a cautionary tale? Is it an environmental feature?), it does have it's moments - the best being found in Harmon Stevens performance as Dr. Leland Masterson - a man turned mad by the experiments of Dr. Arana (our evil villian) - whose performance is a near exact copy of Lon Chaney Jr. as "Lenny" in OF MICE AND MEN...
Average DVD of legendary Z-chiller
I would have to include Mesa of Lost Women in that unique subgenre of "is it spellbindingly awful or just awful?" (members of which include The Creeping Terror, Beast of Yucca Flats, They Saved Hitler's Brain, Teenage Devil Dolls, Battlefield Earth, etc.). Bad movie fans may find this a scream, or merely dull depending on their taste and mind-set at the time of viewing (and how many Carl Dreyer films they've made it through). No rants please, I love Carl Dreyer movies. It is fairly slow-moving, even for a poverty-stricken 50s thriller, and that guitar-and-piano score has the potential to put the most stable person in the rubber room. That said, the plot, dialogue, characterizations, etc. are so loony that there is much to marvel at for those tough enough to stick it out: Jackie (Uncle Fester) Coogan as a demented scientist, Spider-Babe Tandra Quinn's bizarre dance stylings, mutant midgets, florid narration, etc. And this is mandatory viewing for fans of that giant spider...

Mesa Of Lost Women is one of my favorite hunks of cheese! Jackie Coogan (yep, uncle Fester) is a mad scientist, working with petuitary gland transplants. He's successfully transplanted tarantula glands into human women (it doesn't work on men, only turns them into evil dwarves), turning them into mute amazons with extremely tacky wigs. Another scientist visits Dr. Fester and sees the horrible experiments. He refuses to help, so the head spider-woman "Taran-Tella" (Tandra Quinn) injects him with a serum that seems to make him bonkers. The good doctor ends up in the nuthouse, only to escape out a window. Anyway, he seeks revenge on Taran-Tella and shoots her (after she is allowed to dance in a saloon, causing hearts to race). The vengeful, nutty doctor then forces a pilot (Allan Nixon) to take him back to the mesa. Lots of spider-women and dwarves roam around aimlessly. A giant, stuffed tarantula flops onto a hapless victim or two, and fun is had by all. The ending is no surprise, but...

This is a cute romantic comedy from an era when movies were decent

The performances are excellent, and the premise, although unoriginal, is well played out. The problem, if any, is that the movie is a little short, hence the subpar character development. The streaming version here on Amazon contains a few short lacunae: bits and pieces of missing film, usually less than a second or so in duration, and only a few. It's just an old film, you know, that has not been preserved properly. But the audio is quite good, if a bit scratchy at times: again, not often and not too detracting from the entertainment. If you like these old B&W romcoms, and have a spare hour, then enjoy!

It's really hard to figure out some of the movie because of the poor sound. The acting is average & the movie just so-so. The Father, who is the love interest is rather on the old side, old enough to be a bit on the creepy side. They are trying to get you to see a romance between a young educated, serious woman and a dead beat dad who's a boozing womanizer....not romantic.

What a sweet, cute romance; one of those good old 'afternoon classic' movies :) One to sit down after the vacuuming and dishes are done, put your feet up and enjoy some beverage and this movie :) Also just before bed. Nothing strenuous, cute plot with a few twists for fun. Decently shown and you'll smile. (I think, if I am reading it correctly, the "amazon" description is a bit 'off/backwards' or something. Seems the annulment thing is mixed up there in the info.)And the folks in the movie - well, all they really had to do was annul the right one from the right one! Gives a good 'run-around' laugh!) And I'll let you figure that one out while watching this really cute, sweet movie with decent characters and some fun! Make sure you catch the wink in the end!

Another Gripping Griffith Masterwork!
This film really should be on DVD because it has all the traditional Griffith hallmarks of drama, suspense and hard-hitting messages as many of his other popular films already on DVD. Not only that, but Griffith also wrote "Hearts of the World", went to the British front to film parts of this war saga and received personal good wishes from the British Prime Minister regarding this film. All this is shown briefly in a prologue, and then we are introduced to a peaceful French village and its inhabitants, in particular two American families and a young couple. Then we see how cruelly lives and families are torn apart when German troops conquer the village while its men are fighting in the trenches. Griffith's message is, of course, to show the brutality and utter uselessness of war and its effects on the innocent citizen who becomes the victim. In other words, it's not a light, happy film for mere entertainment, but still very rewarding in other aspects.

Forgettable Griffith photoplay
The weakest element of this presentation of HEARTS OF THE WORLD (1918) is the piano accompaniment which repeats a short phrase until the scene shifts, then a new little passage is beat to exhaustion. The best thing here is Dorothy Gish as an ebullient and perky street singer. Her sister Lillian has a more subdued role but still finds ways to clumsily overemote at times.

At one point, Lillian wanders a battlefield after the fighting stops. She finds her beaux (Robert Harron) lying near a trench, concludes he's been killed then lies down next to him, presumably for the night. The next day, stretcher bearers also encounter the prone Harron but realize that he's alive! Does this all strike you as incredibly unbelieveable? Yah, me too.

Let's reconsider that "weakest element" label, which simply must go to a very lame romantic plot. First that Bob would favor bland Lil to colorful Dot (who clearly has eyes for him), second that love conquers all (even mustard gas and...
