Run All Night (DVD+UltraViolet)

Brooklyn mobster and prolific hit man Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson), once known as The Gravedigger, has seen better days. Longtime best friend of mob boss Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris), Jimmy, now 55, is haunted by the sins of his past-as well as a dogged police detective who's been one step behind Jimmy for 30 years. Lately, it seems Jimmy's only solace can be found at the bottom of a whiskey glass. But when Jimmy's estranged son, Mike (Joel Kinnaman), becomes a target, Jimmy must make a choice between the crime family he chose and the real family he abandoned long ago. With Mike on the run, Jimmy's only penance for his past mistakes may be to keep his son from the same fate Jimmy is certain he'll face himself…at the wrong end of a gun. Now, with nowhere safe to turn, Jimmy just has one night to figure out exactly where his loyalties lie and to see if he can finally make things right.

Review :
A Hard-Hitting, Gritty, Emotional Family Crime Thriller with Plenty of Heart and Raw Action
This was by far one of the few movies I've seen in recent months that I absolutely enjoyed every minute of in theaters - to my utmost surprise. It is Liam Neeson's best action movie in a very long time - and blows the socks off any of the garbage "Taken 2/3" Hollywood cash-grab sequels that are purely for money. Yes this does have some awesome action/chase/fight scenes, but at heart this is definitely not a "Taken" film - this is a hard-hitting raw family drama similar to Warrior with all the grit and raw street-ugliness of NARC (and then some). It's a mile-a-minute thrill ride shot brilliantly and has plenty of heart. You really do feel like you are watching these characters and this world Run All Night. Tone-wise, this film is perfect and I couldn't have asked for a more appropriate and darker-looking treatment. The cinematography, the film palette, the raw look and feel just made this all the more serious to watch - excellent. Acting was stellar and relationships...
An effective, old-school action flick imbued with intelligence
Theatrical review. There may be spoilers. While aging movie stars making action movies is nothing new, perhaps no one has been more visible than 62 year old Liam Neeson ("Taken" trilogy, "A Walk Among the Tombstones," "Non-Stop," "Unknown" and others). Here Neeson reunites with director Jaume Collet-Serra ("Non-Stop" and "Unknown) in what may be his best yet.

Neeson plays Jimmy Conlon, a broken-down, drunken hit man for Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris) the head of a NYC mob faction. Maguire, while still shady, is trying to go a bit legit. Jimmy isn't getting anything to do, but his old buddy Shawn feels sorry for him so throws him a bone now and then. Shawn's son Danny (Boyd Holbrook, who also worked with Neeson in "A Walk Among the Tombstones"), is still wanting to do some serious crime and invites some Albanian heroin traffickers to meet with dear old dad in order to pave the way for the drugs being introduced to the city pipeline. But Shawn wants no part of the drug...
Dont expect any heroes nor winners in this one...
Run All Night (2015) is a non-stop-action drama along the lines of Cold in July (2014) meets any of the action packed Liam Neeson films like: Taken trilogy, Non-Stop (2014), or Unknown (2011). Together with A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014) this must be my favorite film with Neeson to this day. I did like him in Unknown (2011), the original Taken (2008), The Grey (2011), and in the Five Minutes of Heaven (2009), but it is with the character of Jimmy Conlon at the age of 63 that Neeson made the biggest impression on me so far. In the film, Neeson portrays an over-the-hill ex-trigger man for an Irish-American mobster gone legit played by Ed Harris (something similar Harris played in the film History of Violence in 2005). Conlon is a washed-up alcoholic with no real friends and money, who keeps hanging around Shawn McGuire (Harris) and his family, because his own son does not want to know him. But when certain unforeseen circumstances occur, and Conlon's son becomes unintentionally...

If looks could kill... Meryl Streep (Silkwood) co-stars in this Hitchcockian murder mystery as the enigmatic Brooke Reynolds. Following the murder of her married lover, she visits the office of his psychiatrist, Dr. Sam Rice (Roy Scheider, Last Embrace, 52 Pick-Up), to leave a wristwatch for the man's wife. Sam is immediately fascinated by the aloof beauty, whom he's come to know through her lover's therapy. When he finds that her father died mysteriously and that she strongly resembles a woman who's been stalking him, the psychiatrist becomes even more obsessed with her. Both fearing and desiring Brooke, he's plagued by nightmares that he'll be her next victim. Striking photography by Nestor Almendros (Days of Heaven) and top-notch direction by screenwriter and director Robert Benton (The Late Show) complement a baroquely twisted plot in this complex, bone-chilling film.

Review :
The Hitchcock Touch
This stylish 1982 suspense thriller is now available as a made-to-order DVD-R from MGM/Fox. Director Robert Benton, fresh from his triumph with KRAMER VS. KRAMER, turned his attention to that most popular pastime of modern directors--paying homage to the giants of the past. He directed this film as his tribute to Alfred Hitchcock.

When a randy curator at a Manhattan auction house (Josef Sommer) is murdered, his psychiatrist (Roy Scheider) is drawn into a mysterious plot involving the curator's mistress (Meryl Streep) and various other interested parties, including the police. The shrink soon realizes that he knows too many of the dead man's secrets--and that his own life is now in danger.

STILL OF THE NIGHT has many of the classic elements of Hitchcock: the innocent bystander who must solve the puzzle to clear his own name (and save his own life), the icy blond beauty who may or may not be the killer, and the shadowy Long Island mansion where the clifftop climax...
A memorable movie
I saw this movie years ago, forgot the name, and have been looking for it ever since. If you like a good old scary suspense movie with characters you care about this is for you.It is a movie that is better than the sum of it's parts and they are darned good. For once I really couldn't tell if she was bad or not, but I'm not telling!

A marvellous thriller.
Some movies lose their power the more you see them over the years, but not this one. I've seen it many times, and even though I know the ending it's still gripping every time. It's also quite eerie through-out, thanks to several very atmospheric sequences. Movies of today don't seem to know how to be scary, simply because they just don't take the time necessary to build up tension, or know how to execute it well enough. This brilliant suspense movie shows you exactly how to do it right. It also helps if you have a good cast, and the teaming of Streep and Scheider proved to be pure genius. -Now all MGM must do is letterbox it for its long awaited DVD release !.

Two Days, One Night SALE

Review :
The feel again…
There is a saying that ‘it’s not the story you tell but how you tell it’, and for me, ‘Two Days, One Night’ is a perfect proof of that. There is an extreme simplicity about this story, some could even say that the simplicity is almost skeletal, but the way that the Dardenne brothers have told it (and, really, how Marion Cotillard has told it) is so earnest, so honest and so rich that this simple tale becomes much more; so much more. It’s odd to say that a film that is practically a repetition of scenes with different faces can be so enthralling, but at a brisk 95 minutes, ‘Two Days, One Night’ packs in SO MUCH character development in those repetitions scenes that it remains one of the most effecting films I’ve seen in all of 2014.

The story told centers around Sandra. Sandra has recently suffered from a bout of depression that left her unable to function in life. She took a leave from work, and it’s apparent...
Seven Samurai for Labor Unions
As others have pointed out, this movie is very compelling. Marion Coitllard is tremendous in portraying the worker who has to reverse her employer's decision to not re-hire her after she is off work on sick leave. The vote, however, was tainted by the foreman, who set up a "us. vs. her" situation: if she is re-hired, the workers won't be getting their bonuses .. and who doesn't want bonuses?

Over the course of the weekend (two days, one night) Sandra, with the constant help of her husband, musters up the courage to try to contact all 8 (or so) employees to get them to change their minds. There are ups and downs, humiliation, and exhaustion, but she soldiers on. There is a built-in narrative tension as Sandra works through the list and we see how close it's going to be. Of course, the list dwindles, so there are diminishing possibilities as the movie nears the end. At one point, in the viewing I saw, audience members cheered and clapped fitfully for a late...
A very naturalistic, personal film
TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT stars Marion Cotillard and is directed by the Dardenne Brothers (and is the first by them that I've seen). It is about a woman (Marion Cotillard) who faces being laid off after being sick so that her co-workers can get a bonus. Since she wants to keep her job (and avoid going on the dole), she goes to each of her co-workers to convince them to vote for her to stay. Despite an extremely simple plot that gets a little repetitive, this film was surprisingly engaging on an emotional level, even if it didn't seem that cinematic at times. It's hard not to sympathize with the character Cotillard plays simply because her situation is so dire. Amidst economic uncertainty, the prospect of losing one's job is difficult, even in a semi-socialist society like France's. I thought the film also illustrated how solidarity can be used to positive effect. When faced with a hard decision, do you go with the selfish option or do you stand in defense of your peers? The answer to this...

This iconic film noir stars Richard Basehart as a cold-hearted cop killer. With a supporting cast that includes Whit Bissell, Jack Webb, and Roy Roberts,  this feature from director  Alfred L. Werker (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,  Shock) is generally considered one of the great police dramas of all time, and a forerunner of TV’s ‘Dragnet’. A prequel to "Stone Cold" in the series of Jesse Stone novels by Robert B. Parker, the story picks up after Jesse Stone is fired from the Los Angeles Police Department. He becomes an unlikely candidate recruited by the town board of selectman to become police chief of Paradise, a small town on Boston's North Shore. The board hopes his failed experience will keep him from digging too deep into the town's secrets. Hungover on his first day on the job, he must investigate a domestic abuse case that ends up leaduing to a money laundering scheme perpetuated by a manager of a local bank. How Tom Selleck's world-weary cop Jesse Stone became the police chief of sleepy Paradise, Mass., is revealed in this engaging prequel to the first made-for-TV Stone feature, Stone Cold (2005). Selleck is once again well cast as the rough-around-the-edges Stone, whose drinking problem gets him ejected from the Los Angeles police force; he soon finds himself the head lawman in a small New England fishing village, where his slow dissolution continues until a routine domestic disturbance case reveals connections to money laundering and murder, with several of the town's most affluent names as possible suspects. Selleck is well-matched by veteran scene stealer Saul Rubinek, and there's good work by Polly Shannon as a city attorney who becomes Stone's romantic interest, and Stephen Baldwin as an ill-tempered local. Fans of author Robert B. Parker (on whose books the Jesse Stone films are based) and Selleck won't be disappointed by this smart thriller. --Paul Gaita

Review :
Great production values
I'll skip commentary on the plot or Tom Selleck. Most people have covered these very well. My perspective is production quality. Generally, television movies are merely okay when judged by music and camera work. After all, the little screen is cheaper than the big screen. The stunning production of the Jesse Stone series sets it above anything seen ever.

I would love to know the location setting. I was born and raised in MA and can't imagine a village like Paradise within commuting distance of Boston. The entire North and South Shore above and below Boston are teeming with residents so tightly packed that merely setting off to pick up milk takes resilience and cunning.I'm thinking that it's really Canada or the state of Maine.

It's the harsh and compelling scenery of the shoreline wrapping around the tiny town of Paradise that sets the appropriate mood for the brooding and iconoclastic new police chief, LA fugitive Jesse Stone. Gorgeous, sunny fall days full of...
Stone Prequel
Excellent lead in to "Stone Cold". Tom Selleck does a great job as Stone in this prequel to the first movie. The back story of him being fired because he drank on the job shows he has a murky past. Him driving to Paradise, and us getting a chance to see character development, is good. He finds some suspicious events tied to the previous sheriff of Paradise, and a good lead as to why the sheriff is retiring early. When he handles a case of a battered wife, he finds the husband is hiding something. If that isn't enough, Jesse's dog Boomer has failing health. It is handled with a sensitive touch. Especially if you have been through it. If you enjoy this be sure to catch the other two movies "Stone Cold" and "Death in Paradise" based on Robert Parker books. You may like "An Innocent Man" as well. It is a drama with Selleck being falsely accused of a crime and then being sent to prison. Tom Selleck is a great actor. Often underappreciated as far as I'm concerned. I have enjoyed ninety...
Selleck is Jesse Stone
Tom Selleck is absolutely perfect as Jesse Stone, a character created by the great crime author Robert Parker. Selleck plays a burned out, alcoholic cop who takes a job in the small town of Paradise, Massachusetts as sheriff. "Night Passage" is the tale of the quest by the emotionally damaged Stone for the killer of a young girl. William Devane costars as Jesse's shrink and he is excellent. Terrific secondary characters. In my opinion, Parker's Jesse Stone series of novels eclipses his famous Spenser books. This story line is the prequal to CBS's fabulously successful "Stone Cold", Selleck's first outing as Jesse Stone. Grab "Night Passage" . . . the Jesse Stone made-for-TV movies are quality productions with superb acting and beautiful cinematography. Stunning music. Exceptional TV. Highly, highly recommended. You don't ofter see TV this well done these days. You must also pick up Stone Cold one of the best ever...

The Evolution Of Jesse Stone: A Pitch Perfect Tom Selleck Headlines 8 Made-For-TV Endeavors
Note: A brief mention about pricing. While it's great to get all eight of the Jesse Stone films together in one convenient shipment, many have been around at bargain pricing for years. You may want to do a bit of shopping for a price configuration that makes sense to you if the ask here seems a little high.

2006: Death In Paradise
2007: Sea Change
2009: Thin Ice
2010: No Remorse
2011: Innocents lost
2012: Benefit Of The Doubt

Tom Selleck is Jesse Stone! I don't know who author Robert B. Parker might have envisioned inhabiting his iconic small town police chief, but Selleck has certainly owned and perfected the role over the course of these 8 made-for-TV movies. Stone must surely be one of the most laid back heroes to ever grace the small screen and Selleck has perfected the minimalism necessary to make this character stand out. In the film world of quick cut editing, these...
