The Mentalist is the best TV series ever!
I have the first 5 seasons and am waiting impatiently for the 6th. I have watched the show on TV since the pilot episode and I rewatch the DVDs. This is one show where buying the DVDs has a long lasting payoff. The show has so many facets that rewatching always uncovers nuances not noticed before. Simon Baker is an outstanding actor. He totally inhabits the character of Patrick Jane. He created it and he owns it. Patrick Jane is a fully 3-dimensional character with a complex personality, a traumatic and compelling background, and plenty of flaws as well as admirable qualities.

The Mentalist is a crime procedural far different from any other and far more entertaining. But against that background it is the story of Patrick Jane, a con artist from a traveling carnival family whose history goes back 100 years. He lives between the world of carney hucksters and the outside world of marks. He has a moral compass that is remarkable for its realty based view of justice. Is it not...

The fifth season of the Mentalist will take you even deeper into Patrick Jane's world. With the capture of Lorelei Martins, Jane is determined to use her in order to find Red John's real identity. Jane uses his wits, honesty, and even deceptions in attempts to "convert" Lorelei. We also get to see more glimpses of Jane's pasts, and (perhaps) learn more about Red John's background. In this season, Jane is more reckless, cunning, and charming than ever.

This season also explored deeper into the personal lives of the CBI team. Lisbon has her own nemesis, a criminal who she is more determined to catch than any other criminal. In the fifth season opener, the CBI and FBI join forces to cover up the mess created when the FBI botched a CBI mission to capture Red John and a CBI agent is brutally murdered. Bertram is back playing politics with his FBI counterpart, and Patrick Jane is determined to crack captured Red John disciple Lorelei (EMMANUELLE CHRIQUI). The case of the week is a doozy - a double homicide with no apparent connection between the two victims. When the CBI and FBI are forced to play nice and investigate the double homicide together, Jane uses his skills to solve the case and to force the FBI to relinquish custody of Lorelei. Great start to the season.

Mentalist
This show is not your average cop show. The show is based in Sacramento, Ca., and I'm happy that some of it is actually filmed there. No doubt CBI's headquarters is filmed in L.A.'s film studios.

Yes this show did start off with Jane tracking down Red John - his wife and daughter's killer. Jane is still trying to catch this illusive serial killer. And having copy cats and "helpers" doesn't really help Jane get any closer to Red John. But for the past 5 seasons, this show has done a good job in showing that Patrick Jane has matured. He can be both obsessed in finding Red John AND being able to function in other activities: I.e. helping Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) investigate crimes. His job is after all a paid consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Why is the the Standard dvd Format
Even if this was the Complete Series 1-7 Blu Ray Box Set it would be super over Priced
But, i must admit I'd easily pay $150.00 for A Mentalist Complete Series BR Box Set
Not worth it (Just buy each Season when they are on sale either through Amazon, WB.com, or even Wal Mart
You can actually get the first Season on Pure HD w/ Season One Blu Ray (for around $20.00) During Sales
another Massive minus is Season 1-5 Have little to no extras which suck
I Love The Mentalist But, this is just WB nickel and diming the fan base Nothing more nothing less

You can buy each season seperately and save yourself $60. Great show, but not worth spending that much to have them all boxed together.

Hope they do a Made for T.V. sequal to it
I never missed an episode while it was on T.V., hated to see it go, but it was time before they got too fantastical with their cases. It was already a stretch getting all of the main Characters from a fictional California police force, into the F.B.I.. This is one of those series I hope my friends with younger children will enjoy when they are adults, many years from now.
It was fun to watch the main character "Patrick Jane", solve cases using his lifetime of Carny Honed skills and Mental Tricks. Fantastical, by all means, but exceedingly watchable every week just the same.
A nice little tid-bit, one of Patrick's antagonists, about 3/4 of the way through the series, who played a recurring role in several episodes, is now one of the main characters in the Police Drama "Murder in the First". She earned this part by playing an excellent antagonist in the Mentalist. Easy on the eyes and very smart, I hope they don't get stupid with her part and make her one of...
