Funny, Over-The-Top Horror
I've always gotten a kick out of this movie. The story line is original (or at least it seems so to me). The gore is startling in a couple of scenes but isn't overpowering. The acting is outrageously over the top but also is endearing.

Thirteen-year-old Fool (Brandon Ames) finds himself in a large suburban house owned by the two slum lords who are about to evict his sick mother and others from a ghetto tenement. He's in the house because he agreed to help two burglars make a score on treasure they heard was hidden there. Unfortunately for Fool (and his two grown-up accomplices), the owners are a brother and sister who call each other Mommy and Daddy. The man (Everett McGill) is a homicidal maniac who goes in for head-to-toe, studded, black leather bondage suits and pump action, single barrel shotguns. His sister (Wendy Robie) is just as looney and just as murderous, a screaming dominatrix. They also have a large vicious dog you wouldn't want to hand feed...that is, unless...

This movie you are looking at is MOST CERTAINLY NOT your typical horror or slasher film. It is a mix of real horrors,dark comedy,and fairytale.
When I got this movie my expectations were very high, and I was glad they weren't let down. I expected alot from this movie, I had heard it was VERY scary, and I'm into horror movies VERY MUCH!!! The bad reviews on here, don't listen to them, see the movie yourself!!!
So Adam is a boy with his family living in some rundown tennant houses, his momma's dying of cancer. Well the kid hears about a treasure, locked up in the bottom of the basement of the house. The sad thing is no one ever comes out of this house alive, and unfortenately for him its not just a myth its the truth!!! Getting in may be a pain, but getting out is 10x's the fun!!! "Hear no evil,speak no evil,and see no evil" is a saying of the mother. Which holds to secret of the basement inhabitants.
There is a girl hidden upstairs though, and is violently...

An earlier review I read of this movie seems to be horribly off. It mentions that it follows a horror-movie cliche where the cops are offered food and then give up the search.

However, this reviewer is dead wrong on several accounts. One, they are not policemen at all, but rather are child services. Two, the horror movie cliche would be having the policemen not believe the little boy crying wolf. Three, instead of following cliches, this movie instead turns around and breaks all of the cliches.

Instead of being afraid, only being able to scream, and seemingly always frozen in place, Fool instead doesn't ever really scream, either runs away or TURNS AROUND, FED UP, AND ATTACKS THE VILLAINS HIMSELF. At one point, he turns around, says "I'm through running" and tackles a man-eating dog that is bigger than him.

Is a character who isn't afraid of the villains, a character who fights back, a cliche? No.

I'd heard various reactions to this film before watching it, some very positive, some negative, both commenting on how confusing and strange it was. David Lynch's 'Eraserhead' was the most popular comparison. While I think any attempts at comparison are going to fall well short of the mark, I'll say that 'Under the Skin' is a slow-burning SF-Horror film that's closer to Kubrick's meditative pace on '2001', with the realistic, semi-improvised dialogue of Gus Van Sant's 'Elephant' and 'Gerry'.

Scarlett Johanssen plays one of two aliens who has taken human form. Just how alien they are cannot be fully appreciated until the second or third 'seduction'. After picking up a stranger in her non-descript van, she brings him to a dilapidated rural house. Leading her would-be suitor into utter blackness, she leaves a trail of clothes behind as she undresses; the unfortunate victim stumbles forward, oblivious to the impossible metamorphosis of the floor beneath his...

Ok, post-pubescent testosterone-driven audiences, go on the internet and find screen caps and then go see TRANSFORMERS for a fifth time, because if that's why you're watching this film, you're going to be one of the haters.

However, if you're in the mood to see a proto-sci-fi film about the allegorical birth, life and death of an unearthly being in a very Kubrickian fashion, UNDER THE SKIN should be a perfect fit for you.

As directed by Jonathan Glazer (SEXY BEAST, BIRTH) the film follows our protagonist, as played by Johansson, as she travels around the Scottish countryside in a white van to seduce men and abduct them for what seem to be extremely nefarious and alien reasons. Almost all of the seduction scenes are set against a completely black backdrop as the men sink into a black abyss all while she's protected and guided by a...
You'll either like it or walk out 20 minutes into it.
First off, if you like how Michael Bay will have a character yell "Something exploded!" after something explodes because, y'know, you need that kind of exposition, you will not like this movie. There's hardly any dialog and very little plot and almost no "action." Second, if you've read the book, you will also probably not like the movie because it isn't a book. It's an adaptation, and a really loose one at that. The focus is on the imagery and eerie soundtrack to evoke an alien sent to Earth to hunt humans for meat that's sent back to her home planet. The subtexts about class inequality and sexual politics aren't there, so don't bother complaining about how this apple isn't an orange. So if you're looking for a narrative with a clear arc and plot points and resolution, or a shot-for-shot remake of the book, yeah, you're gonna hate this. But if you're into artsy, ambiguous European movies with beautiful cinematography and evocative soundtracks and nudity, you might have a good time...

Here's a story about how good this film is
First off, I'll say that this is BY FAR the best live-action film Disney ever produced. None of the irritating condescension that characterizes so many Disney films. No -- this film delivers the goods.

I first saw the film on television as a child. But about ten years ago, I was lucky enough to see the film on the big screen, at a matinee showing in a small-town community theater. The theater was jam-packed with children, ages ranging from about 5 to 10. The kids were chattering like crazy -- the theater was filled with noise. Even when the film started, the kids kept talking.
But very slowly, as the minutes passed, the kids got quieter. And quieter.
Late in the film, when we're moving into the final explosive climax, the Nautilus rams a warship that has been hunting it. The protagonists -- Aronax, Conseil, and Ned Land -- rush to the sub's giant iris window. The iris opens onto an underwater vista -- to reveal, in the murky blue distance,...
A Great DVD of a Great Film
Like many of the other reviewers of this movie, I'm a pre-boomer who was dazzled by the film as a child. Somewhere in my aging mom's attic, I have a few bolts (painted wood) from the movie set of the Nautilus, which I "borrowed" from one of the Disney properties as a kid nearly a half century ago. Disney Animated Classics #23 and #29: Two wonderful films that look better than ever!
The Rescuers was the last feature produced by Walt's legendary team of animators (the nine old men) and is easily their best since Walt's death in 1966. Released in 1977, The Rescuers is a delightful and heartfelt story full of adventure, poignancy and great characters. Both Bernard and Miss Bianca are wonderful creations that compliment each other. Madame Medusa may seem like Cruella De Vil but is not at all forgettable. The voice cast is spot on with Bob Newhart, Eva Gabor, Geraldine Page and the rest giving memorable performances and bringing unforgettable characters to life. The story of these two mice rescuing a little girl keeps you invested the whole time and you care for them very much. The Rescuers may seem a like a little obscure film but the truth is that is a Disney classic through and through.

Another High Quality Disney Release!
For those of you interested in the technical reality of this new Blu-ray release... Rest assured, this collection belongs on your movie shelf! I have always thought The Rescuers looked horribly bad on home video, from the VHS tapes to the DVD's, so I was very intrigued to see what this Blu-ray release would turn out. I was absolutely blown away by the level of quality showcased here! Crisp, clear, and beautifully rendered... The opening charcoal paintings in the credits have a real vibrancy to them, almost as if the viewer is looking at the original drawings. Bernard, Bianca, Penny, and the rest of these timeless characters literally jump off the screen, and I have no qualms saying that they have NEVER looked more alive than they do here on this release. The Rescuers' biggest casualty is the loss of a 15-page Scrapbook holding concept art, character designs, behind-the-scenes production photos, and publicity artwork. Also dropped, and of lesser interest, is "Under the Hat Villains", a 90-second Toon Disney short celebrating the studio's animated villains (including Medusa) with clips and some animator comments. The last omission from the original movie's DVD is "The Ultimate Case" set-top game, which let you sleuth around rooms to find Penny's missing teddy bear (with the Devil's Eye Diamond inside) à la Bernard and Bianca with clues from "Orville."

Lost from The Rescuers Down Under's original Gold Classic Collection DVD are its original theatrical trailer, a virtual DVD storybook, and a 16-question trivia game. And expectedly not resurfacing from inside its case are an Animals of the Outback booklet and chapter insert.
