I 'discovered' this series about 8 months ago and can not get enough of it. The stars of this program, although unknown to most Americans are well known and appreciated in Canada, where this series originated and was filmed, for the most part. The often humorous references to the beginnings of many inventions that Murdoch either builds or works with the inventors on, are wonderful. Yannick Bisson plays Murdoch and heads a terrific cast. All kinds of speech accents flourish throughout the dialogue since many of the men and women who lived in Toronto at that time were immigrants from 'across the pond' and are in fact in real life. The story lines always are full of tongue in cheek humor, and subplots as these characters build not only relationships with one another, but with the viewer. I feel like I know these folks in real life, and with few exceptions, would love having them as neighbors. Forensic Detection In 19th Century Canada
I recently came across The Murdoch Mysteries after seeing Geraint Wyn Davies portray Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in an episode from the first season. With two of my favorites so combined, I had to look further into this very intriguing historical crime drama. To date, I have watched most of the series, and while I was lukewarm about some of the earlier episodes, did stick with it and now find the scripting and plots to be stronger with each ensuing season. Instead of losing steam, Murdoch Mysteries is gaining it, not only in terms of solid story lines but in the development of the characters, who are fleshed out and exude true personality. Speaking of which, Dr Ogden fans should find she sparkles better than ever here.

Never mind there are innumerable crime dramas to choose from, with most of them being pale intimations or knock-offs so that despite being an avid mystery reader, I rarely watch any of them. There is nothing cliched or trite about Murdoch Mysteries. It offers...

Murdoch Mysteries

This is an AWESOME series! Canadian TV has produced a wonderful murder mystery series that takes place in Victorian times, presenting social issues and lots and lots of early scientific methods for solving crimes. The actors in this series account for one of the best ensemble casts that I've ever seen. Our entire family views this series, over and over again, and we sincerely hope that it does not see cancellation for many years to come!

Awesome & fun TV series

I was introduced to Murdoch Mysteries through my Amazon Prime account. I absolutely fell in love with the series and its characters. Set in Victorian Canada, the TV show revolves around 4 main characters and their ability to work together to solve murder mysteries. The program is a little whimsical, a bit humorous, and of course has a little romance, too; something for the whole family to enjoy. I highly recommend it!

One of the Best

Murdoch Mysteries is a very enjoyable 'period piece' Television series (1890's Toronto). There's a little history, a little humor, a little romance, a little scientific discovery (late 1890's style) and lots of Mystery. Yannick Bisson (Detective Murdoch), Thomas Craig (his boss, Inspector Brackenreid), Jonny Harris (Murdoch's assistant and partner Constable George Crabtree) and Hélène Joy ( the coroner and love interest... Doctor Julia Ogden) are endearing characters and perfectly cast for their rolls.

We came rather late to this series.... and have found 'Murdoch' to be one of the 'best.' It's right up there with Poirot, Midsomer, Foyle's War, to name just a few. We've typically had to head across the Atlantic to BBC/ITV for good mystery TV. Who knew that our neighbors to the North were doing such a stellar job with this series? Highly recommended...

Murdoch Mysteries aka the Artful Detective on the Ovation Channel is the best show on TV!! I love this show it's just great. Good story lines, superb acting and great scenery. All around good show - minus all the usual violence. Even though Detective Murdoch works only homicide cases - the murder is the final result of a truly great script. Every season is just marvelous!!!

1901 Toronto Is the Place To Be - For Murder! Great DVD/BluRay Special Features!
Go back to 1901 Toronto, Canada and visit Police Station No. 4. This is a world undergoing massive changes and science is really coming into its own. I love the series for its tons of comedy. And, of course, lots of murders.

In Season 7 you get 18 episodes averaging 44 minutes in length each, for a total of 792 minutes of wonderful murder mysteries. "Murdoch Mysteries" is a hybrid. It's a police procedural, because your protagonists are policemen. But it takes place in a time when forensic science is in its infancy. So a lot of murders are solved by good old intuition and attention to detail, as is the way in an amateur sleuth series. The historical tidbits are fascinating.

If nothing else, you will keep coming back for the characters. In particular, Constable Crabtree is a favorite, as he lends a lot of the comic touch. Totally sincere and dependable, he also loves conspiracy theories and is such fun to watch.

If you go by mystery TV shows, then just about every city or town in America and the UK has elaborately-murdered corpses cropping up all over the place.

So why should New Zealand be denied the fun? Hence we get "The Brokenwood Mysteries," which focuses on a pleasant little down in the land of the long white cloud that just happens to have a number of mysterious corpses. While the first season of this series isn't dramatically different from other shows like "Midsomer Murders," it has a pleasantly languid air and a quirky side that sets it apart.

In "Blood and Water," Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) is sent to the rural town of Brokenwood to investigate an alcoholic farmer found dead in the river. Since the dead man was commonly considered to be an abusive beast who probably murdered his own wife, everyone assumes that he simply committed suicide... but Shepherd isn't convinced. As he digs deeper into the town's ugly little...

I'm a huge fan of what are called "procedural crime shows", where a crime is committed and you watch the detective (or police officer) solve the crime by putting the pieces together. Some of the best are those produced for British, Australian or Canadian TV. This may be the first one from New Zealand that I've seen. It snuck up on my and I was hooked.

If you've read my other "TV mystery" reviews, you know that I do not believe in "spoilers" so you won't find any in this review and I'll try to provide info that will help you decide if the show is for you, but not spoil any of the enjoyment. (After all, it wouldn't be a "mystery" then, would it?)
The series aired in New Zealand in 2014 and may, or may not, have had commercials. Each of the four episodes runs from 91 to 95 minutes and each is on a separate DVD. Each story uses the same format: A murder is committed in the opening moments and nearly always has at least three obvious...
Charming, not brilliant.

This is a perfectly charming, though not brilliant, police procedural. The lead detective is quirky, the pretty girl sergeant is smart and not a bit afraid of her boss. The locale is New Zealand, so don't expect to understand a word they say without captioning, as the New Zealand accent is unique and absolutely not a bit OZ-like. (Well, maybe a bit.) The point is, it is a lot of fun, well made, interesting characters, interesting crimes. More "Midsommer Murders" than "Foyle's War," but that ain't a bad thing. Watch it.

Murdoch Mysteries Collection is truly one of the finest Historical Crime TV series on TV, and it continues now with Season 5 on DVD, and season 6 is also a future reality. All wonderful news for fans of this show.
IF you have not seen any, this Collection is the way to buy at a lower price. Each of the seasons are available individually, but at a significant higher price than what this listing on Amazon is asking at present, being $111.99. Original retail was $239.96. Get them and watch in any order, but watch.

It's all about a Toronto detective from late 1890's who manages to use inventive forensic modes now common in today's crime solving venue. Historic aspects of the show are as good as period sets and costuming. Historical personalities occasionally cross paths with Murdoch (Yannick Bisson). Novel adaptations of Maureen Jennings' writing, this has become a show demanded for continuation. Always intriguing,...
Oh how I LOVE this show!

I absolutely adore Murdoch Mysteries! Nearly every episode is enchanting and clever, and the characters are like good friends (except for Julia, who is like a cheese grater on my nerves). The detectives use old-fashioned C.S.I. type investigative techniques (while making little jokes to the modern audience about it), and there are real-life characters such as H.G. Wells and Nikola Tesla on some of the episodes, since they were alive during the time period in which the show takes place. I gobbled up the first 5 seasons as if they were gourmet Fettucini Alfredo, and now I'm going to get my garlic bread (season 6). I can hardly wait to devour it!

My Favorite T.V. Drama Series Ever
When we signed up for Netflex I scanned all the titles and chose this one because I like the Victorian Era. What I didn't count on was how much I would enjoy this series. I asked my husband to watch it with me because we never agree on what to watch (he's into all those CSI type shows). We both loved it from the start. The set designs, the period costumes, the story lines, the early forensic investigations and most of all the personalities and interactions of all the main characters who work in a Toronto police station during the late 1800's. We couldn't wait until we watched the next episode. When I realized that Netflex would no longer show Murdoch Mysteries (they only aired Seasons 1-3 until early July of 2013), I searched Amazon and ordered this collection and Season 5. You can be certain that I will be looking forward to Season 6 (2012-2013) and Season 7 (2013-2014) . I only hope that Murdoch Mysteries continues for a long time. Phryne Fisher was a dame, brisk, but also innately kind, wealthy but hasn't lost the memory of her past poverty. She was heartwarming, sexy, funny, gutsy, intelligent, and late 29s modern-lady perfection. This arrogant, brash, flirt carried a .38, a diaphragm, and was a kleptomaniac with crime scene evidence items. This series is incredible. The acting is wonderful and unlike some of the other British series, an American can understand what's being said. Foyle is a combination of Sherlock Holmes and Columbo. His driver, Honeysuckle Weeks is great. We want there to be more made. One of my favorite series of all time.

Best Brit Mystery Series

To my thinking, Foyle's War is the best of the best of Brit mysteries. The acting is superb and unlike many of the other series, I can understand the English they speak, for the most part. The fact that we get a lot of WWII history with it makes it a winner for me as I am a history buff. Well worth watching, again and again.

It's 1946 and he's MR. Foyle now, retired from the police force and no longer a DCI. The tag line for Series 8 is "A New War, A New Enemy". The New War is the Cold War, which was in its infancy in 1946. However, as John Chapman, producer, says in Bonus Feature D, the 3 stories in this series "are really all about ripple effects" of WWII. The great war is hardly a distant memory. Soldiers are still abroad and rationing and shortages still bedevil the average Briton.

I enjoyed this series immensely, but it is true that the stories unfold more leisurely. Sometimes the murder mystery is almost forgotten for a while among the other things that are going on. But that's Almost. Loose ends are tied up and the historical background is amazing. The longer length of each episode allows great depth to the storylines and to the characters.

You get 3 mysteries totaling 276 minutes; that's a wonderful 92 minutes each. If you buy the series on discs, Set 8 has 3...

Phryne's fans need have no fear
When I read Cocaine Blues, I fell hard for Phryne (FRY-KNEE) Fisher, Dot, the Butlers, Inspector Robinson (call me Jack) Bert and Cec and the rest of the characters in Kerry Greenwood's delightful series and have since read every Phryne I could get my hands on.

Imagine my joy when, through the miracle of Roku and an Acorn Premium membership, Miss Fisher's Mysteries showed up as a January-February offering and I realized that this was indeed MY Phryne! The Honorable Phryne Fisher has a lot in common with Emma Peel. Smart, dresses to kill, athletic, sexy and courageous. And they both solve mysteries. A good all-year-long gift!

Okay, first of all, I have always loved this series, the stories and the actors. I figured it would be a good gift to give to my mom. She enjoys the Masterpiece programs, and likes to watch them again and again, sometimes as a "marathon." However, my mom doesn't like me to spend money on NEW DVDs for her. So, I try to find them on ebay or at the Goodwill-type stores in town. Sometimes, however, I do buy them new. Then I open them up before I mail them to Mom, so they appear to be used.

When I saw the boxed set at this really good price, I knew I had to get it for Mom. When the they arrived at my house, I made them look used, and then I mailed Mom the first couple of series for Mothers Day. Later this month, the next couple series will go out for her birthday, and so on.

Yes, it's a tad deceitful, but Mom likes a good DVD and a good bargain, so, why not?

Kitchen is complete!

This has got to be the best all-around British series ever. Where can you get British comedy, history, mystery and drama all in the same series and in every episode? Kudos to Horowitz for pulling the plots together. Kitchen is the master of non-verbal expression. The cast is well chosen and they interact with their special attributes. I've watched the series a dozen times and I'm still finding new things. Although each episode is it's own entity, the character development grows with the series, so it help at one time to watch it from beginning to end.It's the best buy in town and you can't beat the price. I've purchased this series for some friends who didn't care for TV series and they ended up inviting their neighbors over once a week for a "Foyle's" party. Start your own Foyle's Fan Club.

Vera We Hardly Know Ye
DCI Vera, played by Brenda Blethyn, is in her fifth year as a series. I like Vera a lot. She is overweight with mussed up hair, never wears make-up, dresses in old fashioned dresses with sweaters, sensible shoes and a god awful long coat with a dodgy hat. She drives an old Range Rover and is always in charge. She is good at her job, damn good, has been at it long enough that she has an instinct which serves her well. She gets her man or woman most of the time, because all of her cases involve murder.

This season the old trusted DI Joe Ashworth is gone. Joe played by David Leon, knew Vera well and her him. A mutual respect and I think a motherly love from Vera. He is onto better things, and Vera now has a new brash young man, DC Aiden Healy. Things are rough in the first couple of episodes but they seem to even out as time goes on. DC Kenny Lockhart, played by Jon Morrisey is still on board. And, we are introduce to several new players. Hopefully we will learn more about...
Indescribable Quality...

I just wanted to add my thoughts to the majority: "Vera" is one of the best contemporary mysteries developed and shown in the last decade or so; yes, there have been others that I've enjoyed, but I feel "Vera" has that indescribable quality that will enable it to run (and stream) for many a year to come.
'Nuff said... just watch one episode, and you will want to see every single one!

Murdoch Mysteries never a disappointment.

Murdoch Mysteries gets better every season. Very exciting and suspenseful. The season starts with challenges for Inspector Brackenreid and ends with a cliffhanger for Geoge Crabtree. I just love this series, every primary character and every supporting character!! Great writing!!! I can't wait for Season 9!!! Enjoy!!!

I think this is one of my favorite crime based shows. I love period drama, and I love learning about criminal investigations. This show combines both in a late 1890 - early 1900 setting. You'll learn how forensics experts solved the cases before they had the help of computers. The cast of characters are funny, interesting, and diverse. This set includes eighteen including the 100th episode where Murdoch and Julia get married.

Review :
Series 17 would be equivalent to "Set 26" in the old numbering system. It is new to DVD.
In 2014 Acorn Home Video started re-numbering all of their series based on the original British sequencing & series breakdown. In the 'set' numbering system (which often split each series into two sets), this would be set #26. I am actually surprised set 25 was issued under that number as Acorn had already switched to the series numbers and set 25 was the entire series 16.

To add more confusion, Acorn created special cheaper 3-disc sets for the big-box stores such as Costco. These have their own set numbers which can look like the regular disc sets, but have different episodes inside.

Now as for the episodes, I think the new cast has found their rhythm here. The series as a whole lost some of it's charm several years ago, but the new cast is adding new life and forming their own new relationships.

The series (seasons) are getting shorter each year, what was once 8 episode series under John Nettles has now been reduced down to 4.

There's Something Missing
I've been watching these on Acorn -- have seen 3 of 4 so far. The acting is still superb. Dudgeon is great as the new Inspector Barnaby and the rest of the ensemble are also excellent. The settings, as usual, are gorgeous. But something is missing. The plots seem artificial.Characters change without sufficient motivation. It's as if everyone's going through the motions, but without much feeling. I note that Brian True-May is gone, so perhaps that's what's missing. Don't get me wrong, these are still fun to watch, but this is (so far) one of the weakest seasons of Midsomer ever -- and I've watched and rewatched all of them. I also wonder whether they're planning to get Gwilym Lee his own show, or somehow transition him to Inspector here.

The feel I have is of a great franchise that is running on its previous glory, with all the parts but weak execution. I really hope it's a temporary aberration -- I've loved Midsomer.

The Case of the Missing Details
It is rarely argued that David Suchet is both refreshing and iconic as Agatha Christie's Poirot. In my opinion David Suchet's performance is like seeing Hurcule Poirot walk off the pages of the wonderful books by Agatha Christie and onto my Television Set. However, I wish to focus on this BEAUTIFUL collection rather than on Suchet's wonderful portrayal of Poirot.

Amazon hasn't posted much about this collection and I bought it on faith that it would be well worth the money. Since there is still little said about the collection, I thought I would give people a head's up as to what they will be getting.

This collection arrived in a Beautiful box measuring 4 and 1/4 inches deep 5 and 3/4 inches wide and 7 and 1/2 inches tall with a flip top lid and a front that folds open revealing four rather bulky blu-ray jewel cases. In side these four jewel cases the 28 disks are found; each labeled with the series number and disk number of that series. Jewel case one...
Poirot: Complete Collection
Where to begin. This box set, which includes every single episode and series broadcast on TV, is a very nice collection. The box, cases and CDs are very high quality and well finished, something which is lacking in many complete series box sets for other titles/box sets. The box set also includes two bonus discs about the making of the series and about the star of the show; David Suchet. The picture and sound quality seem to me to be very good quality and play flawlessly.

Regarding the Poirot series itself, anyone considering buying this has probably seen some of them on TV or on Netflix and are likely very impressed with the quality of the acting, the clever writing, and the fidelity to the time period in which it is set. On Netflix there are currently only 6 of the 13 series available and so it is well worth buying this collection to watch and own all 13. The earlier series are shorter, episodic style mysteries which last about 60 minutes each. From about series 4...
A great addition for any Agatha Christie (and David Suchet) fan

This collection provides a complete collection of all of the David Suchet Poirot's from 1989-2014, including all of the special videos about the series: Being Poirot (62 minutes), an 18 minute interview with Suchet, a 33 minute interview with Mathew Prichard (Christie's grandson), Super Sleuths (47 minutes, a documentary on the series), David Suchet on the Orient Express (47 minutes), and a behind-the-scenes featurette (46 minutes), and another interview with David Suchet (19 minutes). It also includes a collector's guide with articles by David Suchet and Mathew Prichard, episode synopses, character profiles, information about Poirot and Poirot's obituary in the New York Times. If you don't have all of them, this is an easy way to obtain the complete collection. The series is an absolute delight, and my compliments to David Suchet for being THE Hercule Poirot.

Excellent Series

I purchased this series from amazon UK in the Region 2/PAL version. All five episodes are excellent. The actor replacing Jason Hughes is very good and blends in smoothly with the rest of the cast. I really liked Jason Hughes (as DS Jones) and hated to see him leave but I think the new actor makes a good replacement. I think the running time for the series since John Nettles left is usually about 90 minutes whereas the original series with Mr. Nettles ran about 100 minutes. Even so these are excellent stories once you realize that Neil Dudgeon has different approach to the story and is not a Tom Barnaby clone. I was very happy to see the series continue. I don't get too concerned about run times as long as the show is entertaining and well done. I think Midsomer fans will be very well pleased with this set of mysteries.

It's Still Great!

The new DCI Barnaby continues to develop in this fine series. Barnaby's new Sergeant, Nelson, is an excellent addition. The relationship between Barnaby and his wife and dog is also on display here. All in all, a worthy continuation of one of the finest series ever on television. If you liked it before, you'll continue to like it here. One reviewer says this is supposed to be the last series. I certainly hope not! As long as Midsomer has people left to be murdered, I want to keep watching.

"The Killings of Copenhagen" is the 100th Episode of a great mystery series, and the last story in Set 25. For this special event, the episode takes us back to Badger's Drift, the village which hosted the very first Midsomer Murder, in both the TV series (1997) and Caroline Graham's first Inspector Barnaby mystery novel (1987).

Just before the start of this Set 25, Sergeant Benjamin Jones (played by Jason Hughes), who has been at Barnaby's side from 2005 to 2013, was promoted to Detective Inspector. It's nobody's fault but Barnaby's, because he recommended the promotion. But as Jones has left Midsomer for Brighton, Barnaby needs a new sergeant. This Set (which corresponds to the English Series 16) introduces DS Charlie Nelson. Young, active, and a city-boy who has to be introduced to village ways.

I think Gwilym Lee does a good job stepping in as the new sergeant. He isn't Jones, he doesn't try to be - he is someone new. If you've been a faithful follower of...

Ex-cop, Laura Thyme (Pam Ferris-`Little Dorrit' `Jane Eyre' `Darling Buds of May' `Middlemarch'), is a housewife who loses her husband to a younger woman. Rosemary Boxer (Felicity Kendal-`Edward the King' `Camomile Lawn'), lectures on horticulture, but looses her university job. An odd pairing, which began from very different pasts. Starting a business together makes sense till mystery, sometimes a death, appears around too many corners. Amateur sleuthing once again hits the British TV screen, not new, but this is definitely different. Not just for women. It's good mystery, good criminal policing, and of course beautiful scenic filming (not just England). Even the gardener's will like this action.
