Dangerous. Mesmerizing. That's the final verdict on ABC's HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER, the sexy ensemble drama where brilliant and seductive Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) dominates her classroom as powerfully as she dominates the courtroom. Each year, Annalise chooses a handful of top law students to assist her with her high-profile, albeit morally ambiguous, court cases. But the lines between defending and committing murder soon begin to blur when Annalise and her students become intimately involved in a sordid homicide that could destroy them all. Ride this raw, intense rollercoaster with all 15 episodes; plus, experience exclusive, never-before-seen bonus features available only on DVD. HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON -- from it's first from to its last, this new national obsession exhibits "intent to thrill" in the first degree.

Review :
Viola Davis Takes This Show to the Next Level
While How to Get Away with Murder is by no means an accurate telling of law school or court cases, it is incredibly entertaining and downright gripping. Each episode focuses on one murder case that Professor Keating and her team of students work to solve, but also weaves in an overarching storyline that delves into a student's murder on campus. Of course, there are affairs, romantic scandals and other subplots that also add to the drama. The episodes move quickly and leave you hanging.

I don't usually like crime shows and I'm not a Grey's or Scandal fan (sorry, Shonda), but How to Get Away with Murder has me totally hooked. Viola Davis makes this show - her impeccable acting elevates it to the next level, which makes you feel a little less slimy for watching such an unrealistic thriller. Without her, it could verge on a "Law and Order", trashy kind of drama. With her, it's AWESOME.

Great for your next TV binge.

This is so good! Finale of the season had me guessing til the very end, but I was still surprised by the last scene. Great TV!
Viola Davis is sensational in the lead role, a tough-as-nails defense attorney who has some significant skeletons in her closet. (The rest of the cast is excellent as well.) The artifice of having several law students work with her is very good, as they compete to be her favorite. There is also a background mystery that is very intriguing, and I think will keep us guessing for quite a while about what actually happened.

Overall, my favorite new show of the year.

Quirky Law Show
This is an entertaining, stylized crime show that is quite fun to watch. As a tough law instructor and attorney, Viola Davis is great. Her character has selected 5 students to help her office solve a crime each week and find a way to get her clients declared not-guilty. The characters are quirky and the cases colorful. Nothing dull about this show. No one is who they appear to be is one theme of the show. There's also a personal situation for Davis' character which needs resolution overarching the series which brings cohesion. The setting is Philadelphia. Am always looking for something suspenseful with a problem to solve for treadmilling, and these series is great to exercise to. Time goes by quickly. There are some scenes involving sex, so you may want to watch it after the kids are in bed.

Review :
Love this set!
Received my "Murder, She Wrote: The Complete Series" yesterday. I love this set! I was one of those people who purchased all of the individual sets as they came out but I knew if there was ever a day where a complete set came out I'd get it. The series itself is timeless. I used to watch this series with my Grandmother back when it originally aired on CBS. I loved it then and I love it now!

As for the Complete set itself. It's beautifully put together. All 12 seasons are up together in a box that is just the right size for my book shelves. The box set has the slimmer DVD packages rather than the bulky sets when the series was originally put out on DVD. One thing I really like is that there are no double sided DVD's in this set! This is a major improvement from the first 3 seasons put out years ago where they were double sided and I would have some digital issues from time to time with those sets. So again...I love this set!!!

Some have complained about the movies...
WOW! - Over 212 straight hours of Murders on DVD . . . . .
Just think, if you ever sat down and watched each one of these 264 episodes end-to-end for 24 hours a day, it would take over 8 and half days to watch the entire series that ran for 12 seasons on TV (from 1984 to 1996). Since I think at least one murder occurred in every episode, that's one a heck of a lot of murders. I was always amazed that every place Jessica ever went, another murder occurred, and many of them right there in her own small town of Cabot Cove, Maine. That place must have been the murder capital of the world. I certainly wouldn't want to be around Jessica for very long or I just might have turned up dead. Even though this TV series is still on TV in reruns, we still watch it every day it's on. We truly love it. I'm sure we've probably seen every episode numerous times but we still enjoy watching each one of them. We already own every one of the 12 individual sets, but it's interesting to see it re-released as one complete set (but I guess without the 4 extra movies)...
Great show in perfectly compact packaging
Murder she wrote

This set is fantastic. This is one of the best examples of classic procedural television that I can think of. This complete set is exactly what you want if you are a fan of the series.

Discs

This set itself contains only the single sided discs. This is fantastic if you consider the fact that many movies/shows suffer from poorly created double sided discs.

The entire set has 63 discs containing 263 episodes. That is quite a lot of crime solving

Packaging

This packaging is very slim. The entire set takes up about as much space as the first four individual seasons.

Do you need this?

If you are in the market for some Angela Landsbury goodness then you should consider your options. If you have none of the previous seasons then you probably want this complete set. It will definitely be your best deal. If you own some or most of the individual seasons you might want to just update the...

Dick Powell stars as Raymond Chandler's hard-bitten, world-weary private detective, Philip Marlowe, in this classic film noir adaptation of Chandler's novel "Farewell, My Lovely". Marlowe takes a job looking for Moose Malloy's (Mike Mazurki) girlfriend Velma. Malloy's a petty criminal just released after a seven-year prison sentence, and Velma has not been seen for six years. But a simple missing-person case becomes much more twisted than Marlowe ever anticipated as initially promising clues lead to a complex web of deceit, bribery, perjury and theft, in which no one's motivation is clear ... least of all Marlowe's.

Review :
Farewell, My Lovely on Film
I read Raymond Chandler's 1940 novel, "Farewell, My Lovely" recently Farewell, My Lovely and wanted to see the film. Chandler's novel has been filmed three times. The first film was "The Falcon Takes Over" in 1942. The most recent adaptation was in 1975 in a film starring Robert Mitchum. The 1944 film I saw, "Murder My Sweet" is the second and most famous of the three adaptations. Edward Dmytryck directed the film which features Dick Powell in the role of private detective Philip Marlowe. Although it is a detective film, "Murder My Sweet" has become a noir classic. It received several Edgar Awards from the Mystery Writers of America, including best picture, best screenplay, best author, and best actor.

Chandler's novel has a complex, disjointed plot which cobbles together at least at least two separate story lines. The strength of the book lies in its portrayals of people and places, language, and...
Tracing a Missing Person
Farewell My Lovely, 1944 film

This is the film version of Raymond Chandler's "Farewell, My Lovely". It opens with Philip Marlowe being questioned by police detectives. It started when Marlowe was hired by Mike Malloy to look for an old girlfriend. Malloy had been away for years. Marlowe finds a dead end. Then a stranger hires Marlowe to ransom stolen jewelry. Marlowe is sapped, his client Marriott cannot speak. The police question him but Marlowe knows little. Then a reporter visits him to ask questions but Marlowe figures out the answers. Next Marlowe is hired by Mrs. Helen Grayle, the woman whose necklace was stolen. Malloy takes Marlowe to meet a guy; Jules Amthor is very interested in that necklace. They try to get information from Marlowe. [There are some novel special effects here.]

Marlowe continues in his quest for the truth. Ann Grayle hates her stepmother. Mr. Grayle was the owner of Marriott's apartment, so the police questioned him. Helen...
Murder, mayhem and more!
Dick Powell as the cynical, world weary detective Philip Marlowe is so perfect for the role that one can't imagine another actor in the part. But aside from Marlowe, the bad guys are more interesting and more fun than the good guys, and the bad guys are quite a stable full of delicious villains. Clair Trevor is the two-timing blond femme fatale, Mike Mazurki is the psychotic hulk Moose Malloy, who hires Marlowe to find his missing girl friend. Esther Howard joins the group as a drunken slattern, Otto Kruger is the sophisticated, smooth-talking blackmailer, always seen with a flower in his button hole, and Ralfe Harolde plays the incendiary psychiatrist suspicious eyes darting back and forth. Philip Marlowe is plunged into a cistern of deception and murder and is obliged to claw himself out.

I did not select HD to download but the $1.99 version was clear and sharp. As in virtual all black and white films, shadows play a large part, almost taking on a life of their own. The...

Miss Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis, Girl with a Pearl Earring) is back with more intriguing mysteries and exquisite fashion. A private detective in 1920s Melbourne, Phryne has a knack for being in the right place at the right time—and she’s usually armed with the right weapon. Aided by her maid, Dorothy “Dot” Williams (Ashleigh Cummings, Tomorrow, When the War Began), Phryne ventures from the city’s mansions to its brothels, gaining admirers and enemies along the way.

Often assisting their investigations are Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page, The Secret Life of Us) and Constable Hugh Collins (Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Cloudstreet). Jack finds Phryne’s eager interest in his cases exasperating, but he comes to rely on her crime-solving instincts—and is increasingly captivated by her other charms. John Noble (Fringe, Sleepy Hollow) guest stars in this series of the hit Australian drama.

Review :
SEXY and mysterious and she stars in a crime series
A stellar Season 1; Season 2 is as Deco-delicious as the first.
Self-indulgent flapper Miss Fisher and her world are Hotsy-Totsy. Nifty! Kerry Greenwood, who's novels are adapted, calls this TV series "Perfect". Sets -locations- costumes -props, all the Bees Knees. Worth more than 5-stars, like Poirot, Downton Abbey, and Midsomer Murders. Ritzy 1920s Jazz included.
Flapper Period Bliss! I'm hoping for a ten-season run.

Phryne Fisher was a dame, brisk, but also innately kind, wealthy but hasn't lost the memory of her past poverty. She was heartwarming, sexy, funny, gutsy, intelligent, and late 29s modern-lady perfection. This arrogant, brash, flirt carried a .38, a diaphragm, and was a kleptomaniac with crime scene evidence items. Phryne (pronounced Fry-nee) was spiffily played by Essie Davis (Girl with a Pearl Earring). A PI, always a step ahead of the local cops, not unlike Poirot, Miss Marple, and Sherlock. Cops DI Jack (Nathan Page) and Constable Hugh (Hugo...
Please don't let it end!
The charm of this delightful series can be summed up by the following dialogue:

"There's been a murder, Mr. Butler."
"Does that mean there'll be one less for dinner?"

or how about:

(referring to Phryne [that's FRY-nee] on the telephone)
"It's Miss Fisher. She's on holiday again."
"Any murders yet?"
"Just one, sir."

I love it.

The first series of MISS FISHER'S MURDER MYSTERIES was an absolute delight. The Greta Garbo/Jean Harlow hybrid that IS the ineffable Essie Davis as Miss Phryne Fisher is back and in this reviewer's opinion, Series 2 is even better!

This outstanding Australian series is a breath of fresh air in the Detective/Mystery genre for a number of reasons: the acting, the scripting, the wit and taste in every aspect of production. If I had to single out one element that is perhaps the defining feature of this program, it would be the absolute...
The Sexiest Detective is back (even sexier) and even better jazz score this time. Review includes Bonus Features but NO SPOILERS
First a note: If you are coming to this review but have not watched Season/Series One, PLEASE go back to Season One and watch that first. It will put things in a better perspective to enjoy what has become my favorite mystery series (among many!). Really. Trust me. You can see my review of Series One here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R314SAGWHSEPCE/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00A27O5AW and I promise - ”NO SPOILERS” (I hate them!)

Now that I’ve encouraged you to start with Series One, I’ll turn my attention to this product – I don't see the BD version listed on Amazon yet - The actual release date is May 27th - I was provided a review copy by the distributor - but Amazon usually combines DVD and BD versions anyway. The Bluray of Series Two. There are a few reasons to get the BD versus the standard DVD and watching it on Amazon Instant or one of the streaming services. The BD has great images and you’ll probably hear the great 20s...

Based on the novels by Kerry Greenwood

“A blockbuster hit” —The Sydney Morning Herald
“Witty and elegant” —The Australian

Seen on public television

In 1920s Melbourne, the Honorable Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis, Girl with a Pearl Earring) is a thoroughly modern woman operating in a mostly male world. The glamorous “lady detective” goes about her work with a pistol close at hand—and, more often than not, a male admirer even closer.

To the dismay of Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page, The Secret Life of Us), Phryne’s investigations take her through back alleys, jazz clubs, and shady neighborhoods. Ignoring the dangers all around her, she glides through life determined to enjoy every moment. But beneath her devil-may-care attitude, Phryne hides ghosts from the past that continue to haunt her.

Gorgeously costumed and evocatively shot, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries also stars Hugo Johnstone-Burt (Cloudstreet), Ashleigh Cummings (Tomorrow, When the War Began), Miriam Margolyes (Little Dorrit), and Nicholas Bell (Shine). Miranda Otto (The Lord of the Rings) guest stars.

Review :
Phryne's fans need have no fear
When I read Cocaine Blues, I fell hard for Phryne (FRY-KNEE) Fisher, Dot, the Butlers, Inspector Robinson (call me Jack) Bert and Cec and the rest of the characters in Kerry Greenwood's delightful series and have since read every Phryne I could get my hands on.

Imagine my joy when, through the miracle of Roku and an Acorn Premium membership, Miss Fisher's Mysteries showed up as a January-February offering and I realized that this was indeed MY Phryne! I've now, at great sacrifice of housekeeping and household nutrition, watched every episode in Season One. I can, without reservation, hereby pronounce Miss Fisher's Mysteries a triumph!

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation spared no expense in recreating the Melbourne of the late 1920s nor the luxurious accoutrements of Phryne's world from Hispano-Suiza, to steam train, to Phryne's spectacular wardrobe. Essie Davis is perfect; fully portraying the many facets of Phryne, champion of the underdog, sensuous...
Good DVD/BluRay Extras and 13 Murder Mysteries Both Playful and Grim
The Honorable Phryne Fisher has a lot in common with Emma Peel. Smart, dresses to kill, athletic, sexy and courageous. And they both solve mysteries. Except Phryne (pronounced FRY-knee) lives in 1928 and her foes are more realistic than the I-vant-to-rule-the-world type usually found in "The Avengers".

We first meet Phryne disembarking at Melbourne, Australia. She almost immediately receives an engraved invitation to dine with her old friends, Lydia and John Andrews, and her indefatigable gossip of an aunt.

When Phryne arrives at the Andrews', it's just in time to see her host's body carried out on a police stretcher. According to Aunt Prudence, "It seems that John collapsed suddenly after a light breakfast of tea and kumquat marmalade toast. And the maid found him, purple in the face and cold to the touch on the bathroom floor."

Phryne's investigation leads her to several interesting characters, including a French-Russian tango dancer,...
Delightfully decadent new 1920's detective series
Move over, Mrs Bradley - there's another jazz-age lady sleuth in town! Author Kerry Greenwood first began writing her series of "Phryne Fisher" books in 1989, and earned legions of fans worldwide with her glamorous, sharp-witted 1920's heroine, Miss Phryne Fisher.

The Hon. Phryne Fisher has returned to Melbourne, Australia after many years of living abroad. Despite her well-heeled manner, Phryne hides a hardscrabble childhood spent in abject poverty, and is still haunted by the mysterious disappearance of her beloved sister Janey. It takes only a few moments after Phryne's arrival on the Melbourne dock for the murders and mysteries to start, but with her talent for attracting friends from all walks of life, including cab drivers Bert (Travis McMahon) and Cec (Anthony Sharpe), Mr Butler (Richard Bligh), Constable Hugh Collins (Hugo Johnstone-Burt), Aunt Prudence (Miriam Margolyes), Dr Mac (Tammy Macintosh) and new ward Jane (Ruby Rees Wemyss), Phryne is ready for...

Essie Davis (The Babadook, The Slap) returns as Miss Phryne Fisher, a “lady detective” from Melbourne with a fabulous sense of fun and a flair for solving crimes. In a country reemerging from the shadow of World War I, Phryne takes life in her stride—and murder, too. Detective Inspector Jack Robinson (Nathan Page, The Secret Life of Us) works alongside her, although she often outraces him to the crime scene. Despite Jack’s efforts to keep matters on a professional level, their playful partnership is growing more and more personal. In Series 3, Phryne and Jack’s developing relationship is matched by the on-again, off-again romance of Phryne’s assistant, “Dot” Williams (Ashleigh Cummings, Tomorrow, When the War Began), and Jack’s constable, Hugh Collins (Hugo Johnstone-Burt, San Andreas). But with the unexpected arrival of her father in Australia, Phryne recalls troubling incidents from her past—and contends with ominous affairs in the present.

Review :
you will love this.
This show is original, the costumes are gorgeous and the acting superb.
