Review :
Suprisingly decent and beautifully shot
You know the type of movie this is. It's like Open Water in a forest. Or Frozen (the Adam Green one, not the singing one), except good. Or All is Lost, except with more dialogue and less water. Backcountry is one of those survival movies, ostensibly "based on a true story" in that, I'm sure someone, somewhere went hiking and was mauled by a bear at one point in history. It's man (and woman) against nature. It's filmed with real life bears! It features all sorts of horror movie clichés! It has a stupid lead! It's...actually pretty decent.

Backcountry tells the story of boyfriend and girlfriend, Alex and Jenn, who decide to go hiking through a Canadian forest. Jenn is a corporate lawyer from the city where this nature stuff is completely foreign. Good thing she has her seasoned outdoorsman boyfriend along to show her the ropes. Alex is the aforementioned seasoned outdoorsman boyfriend...who spurns taking a map, gets rid of cell phones and doesn't...
Four stars!
Four stars!

As the reviewer "Wiz" noted, it's easy to forget about the simple dangers of nature, amidst all the monster/supernatural/slasher movies. For that reason, I have to admit I pre-judged this film from the mindset "how can a stupid bear possibly make for a good thriller," having become jaded by all those other less-real threats. But, then I decided to sit down with this one and give it a shot, and I have to say, the very simplicity of this film is what makes it so compelling, and it is indeed compelling. I found myself actually pissed at the male lead for refusing to pack a map and other stupid mistakes that eventually led them to their fate.

I will say that I found their encounter with the lone trail guide/hiker to be actually more disconcerting than the bear I already knew they were going to run into. Eric Balfour turns in a convincing, if brief, appearance that had me wondering if he might reappear as the real danger to the two...
THIS IS THE WAY
If you happen to peak at the cover while looking at the title, you know it is about an encounter with a bear, that is not going to be pretty. Alex (Jeff Roop) and his girlfriend Jenn (Missy Peregrym) go camping late in the season on a trail he knew as a kid. He doesn't need a map so guess where this goes. It is just a matter of time before our couple who don't know how to play dead, encounter a bear.

Now the question of who survives and who doesn't is the only mystery. I was once told you don't have to be the fastest person when running away from a bear, you just can't be the slowest (pushing someone down and tripping are fouls to consider). Rape whistles are not really effective, but if that is all you got...I'm sure some people who are falling flap their arms too.

Of course our couple can't just run into a bear. It has to be introduced slowly to build the tension. The encounter was more like a shot of a circus bear yawning with a dubbed roar then show some...
